This is another album from the B.B.C. archives featuring The Pogues taken from sessions for David 'Kid' Jensen, Janice Long, Phil Kennedy and of course John Peel. This album covers the period 1984-86 or if you like The Pogues albums Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy And The Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God during this period the band were one of the best in Britain with a fearsome live reputation and led by a wonderful poetic Irish songwriter in Shane Mac Gowan. There are some wonderful versions of songs from these three albums including Streams Of Whiskey, Sally Mac Lennanne, A Pair Of Brown Eyes and If I Should Fall From Grace With God there are also songs that don't appear on the albums including Whiskey You're The Devil, Greenland Whale Fisheries and inevitably Danny Boy.
These recordings because of the time constraints of the sessions have the energy of live music and probably reflect what the band could do on stage also by the eighties the B.B.C. recording equipment was a lot better than it had been for artists in the sixties this means that the recordings sound great also you don't get any D.J. interjections it is just the Pogues and their music. So this is a musical snapshot of The Pogues at their height, but it couldn't last soon shall we say Shanes demons caught up with him and the band, they would never be this good again but for these few years they were one of the best bands of the eighties.

Good quality recordings; so much so that most of the tracks sound almost the same as the album versions, plus a couple of repeat tracks, which i found a little disappointing.. on the plus side some interesting new stuff too though (5 songs). When Shane was firing on all cylinders there wasn’t a band that could beat them, sad (but no surprise) he soon burned out.

Have basically everything the pogues & Shane / Shane & the popes released however these being live radio versions make them different to studio , even some tracks that are on here twice aren’t quite the same , delighted with this cd .
