To start, the quality control is terrible. Some of the boxes came bent (which would have been a packaging problem) and most came with some form of fold or cut defect. When you finally get the boxes together, there is a significant amount of open space at two of the corners - enough to be concerned about their ability to be moved/protect your comics.
The handles are also a problem. While they are indeed double thick, the interior flap only folds to slightly above the handle opening (as opposed to all the way to the top), and don't allow for your end comics to lay flush. I had to under fill the boxes to make sure I wouldn't get any weird creases in my comics.
I don't really have any valuable comics, and a lot of them are in bad condition to begin with, so I don't care all that much. If you're someone who cares about the storage conditions of your comics I would look elsewhere. The only reason I gave this product a second star is that they still close properly and they're really the only reasonably priced option on Amazon. I would definitely suggest getting boxes at your local comic shop if you're concerned about quality.
* cost vs value is good
* easier to handle and store than long boxes
* easy to assemble
* fits ~150 comics per box (bagged and boarded - modern size)
* a bit wider than needs to be for modern size comics
* the fold in handles
A word about the handles. These are punched out form the side and fold in and over the inner layer. In a word these are no good. They do not stay folded in, in place. They need additional tape to hold them in place.
Overall, the job of holding your comics and seems to be sturdy enough to stack several high.
P.S. 16 of these fit perfectly on the AmazonBasics 4-shelf units
*Double thickness handles and bottom - Brilliant white
Yes. This is how it is designed.
*Stackable - Cardboard Corrugated Materials - Holds 150- 175 Comics
Yes. They are stackable cardboard boxes.
*Dimensions - Exterior L 15.75 X W 7.5 X H 10.75
Yes. Close enough. Measuring on the OUTSIDE without lid I get closer to L 16" x W 8" x H 11"
*10 Boxes in Bundle
Yes, and lids were included.
The basic claims are accurate, but I would like to expand on what some of the other reviewers have said.
One reviewer said that the cardboard was "cheap". Actually, they are made of a triple wall cardboard (flat, corrugated, flat, corrugated, flat). The cardboard itself is nice and stiff. Plenty thick to handle the full weight of comic books.
There are two design issues I did not like.
The inner flaps fold up on the ends but do not fold up to the full height of the box. They extend about 1" above the handle or about 3.5" short of the full height, so the "double thickness handles" is correct, but the design does not provide a full-height smooth surface for your comics.
The second design problem is the handles. One reviewer mentioned that the handles fold into the box. This is true. The handles are meant to fold in and wrap around the end layers of cardboard and vertically back up inside the box about half an inch. This creates an additional "bump" of cardboard that your comics end up resting against if the handles stay folded in. You could cut them off, but you could risk tearing the handle holes while lifting.
Now the ugly part. The boxes I received were poorly made. The quality control in their production appears to be very poor. Out of ten boxes, they all folded very inconsistently. The reason is because they weren't cut out accurately and the factory creases were really inconsistent. Sometimes the hand holes in the two layers of cardboard don't line up, so the handles are pretty easily screwed up. Sometimes the bottom flap doesn't extend the full length of the box, leaving a little gap on the bottom that your end comics can fall into. I'm not sure if this is a problem, but I'm concerned that an end comic or two could get into the gap and if I'm not careful, I could bend the bottom of them when I slide comics forward or back when I am flipping through them.
That brings my long-winded review almost to an end. They work. They hold comics as intended. The design and quality problems make me worry about possible damage to my books, particularly on the ends. Since my intention is to keep my comics in original condition, I don't see how these boxes meet my goals or expectations. If your goal is a box to hold comics without regard to protecting their value, you may not be concerned. Since I don't want to hassle with a return, I will make them work, even if I have to do some modifications.
