The Black amp;amp; Decker 20V MAX Lithium Cordless Drill with AutoSense TM Technology instead has an automatic clutch that has proven to be three times more accurate than a mechanical clutch. Homeowners no longer need to experiment with trial and error to set the clutch. The 20V MAX Lithium Cordless Drill with AutoSense has two modes, drill and drive. In drive mode, a microprocessor continuously measures the tools performance. As the screw enters the material there is a rapid change in its torque profile. The microprocessor analyzes the rate of change and stops most screws flush with the material within three milliseconds.

B&K model Photo explaination :
1. The screw shown under a straight edge sunk at about 10-degree off normal I wasn't paying attention of what I was doing otherwise would be perfect flush.
Model comparison :
2. Photo#6 unfinished screw to the left was made by Bosch with static autosense, the screw to the right was finished by BDCDE120C.
3. Photo#7 refocus same photo on Bosch torque, setting = 7, top value.
Comment : The Bosch model requires to reset the autosense value for different screw length because longer screw finish in a higher torque.
Comment : BDCDE120C use a relative torque sense profile that is insensitive to screw size, length or materials.
Hardwood hint :
Full depth pilot hole may corrupt the autosense torque profile preventing screw head flush finished.
Do experiment with a shallower pilot hole from half to 2/3 deep to seek best result.
w/wo pilot hole, final approach in full throttle when screw body is half way in for consistent flush result.
Feature could benefit next revision model.
1. Could use a brighter LED chip
.. Current model's illumination is well suitable to avoid occupant's attention in a break in attempt .. too limited for me.
2A. Further refinement in the firmware : within first second motor autosense cutoff, if screw head isn't flush, user can squeeze trigger once again (full throttle) to flush finish it. In that, firmware remembers the last torque profile used can scale it up by 1.4x in each next run. If screw head still not flush, user may, within 1 second, squeeze trigger the third time to use a profile of 1.4x1.4 and so forth, until flush finished.
2B. The firmware has "learned" this is hardwood and will maintain the learned scale use last. This way user don't need to use follow up triggering to experience a flush result until the tool sit there for longer than a preset time, it will reset itself to factory default.
I looked everywhere for additional accessories and could not find many, so I made up my own drill box and accessories from the many choices you can get from Black & Decker and other tool manufacturers. That may be the only disappointment with this drill, but my total kit for it is pretty awesome now, if I may brag about it so!! It comes with a double ended Straight and Phillip's bit driver that sits on the foot of the drill and is really handy when needed. The batteries are reasonable in price, but you have to search for the best price. They are easy to change, but as I said before, you won't have to change them soon, as they hold a charge for a long time!! Too cool. It is forward and reversible with an easy to switch button near the trigger. The speeds are variable and driving power is excellent! You will NOT be disappointed with this drill and the other features I did not mention. GREATEST PORTABLE DRILL I HAVE EVER OWNED!!!!
Update: The power level hasn't budged in 3 months after using this drill several times on light projects (I still haven't charged it beyond the charge it came with.) I'm not loving the self-sensing technology. I like the clutching system of other drills better. Other than that, because it is so light and small, this is my "go to" drill and I love it!!!!
Update: Well, after having this drill and using it quite a few times, the power level finally went down to one bar after removing several 3 inch screws and several projects since last posting. This drill amazes me! By far the best drill I have ever owned. I just wish it didn't have the "auto-sensing" feature, which really does not work on my drill. Love the light weight and the smooth action.
