I had mixed results. The grill/griddle worked best when it was cooking one type of food rather than a mix like eggs, pancakes, bacon, etc. And the cooking temperature chart in the included Instruction Guide/Recipe Guide (there are no recipes) are hit and miss with most too high for the indicated foods. From the very beginning there were problems with food sticking and difficulty in removing all stains from the grill/griddle.
There are some instructions and warnings in the Guide worth mentioning because although this is not my first appliance of this type they were either unexpected or may impact the decision to purchase or not.
Perhaps most notable is that the ceramic non-stick coating is stated to be more durable than regular non-stick coatings, but it requires the same care to avoid scratching. This includes that no cutting should be done on the surface and no metal scrub pads or metal utensils should be used on the ceramic finish.
And during storage to avoid scratches/damage nothing should be stacked on the grill plate. And, I found clean-up to be difficult. To avoid damaging the coating I was reluctant to scrub the surface and it required it almost immediately. I am not impressed with the coating.
Other warnings in the Guide. Countertops may discolor from the heat and should be protected by placing it on either coasters, trivets or placemats that are non-plastic and heat resistant. The cord (36 inches) is intentionally short to avoid inadvertently tripping on or becoming entangled with the cable. No extension cord should be used with the device so the user may wish to ensure the fixed distance from an outlet will work with their kitchen layout.
This design is a departure from the usual construction of electric grills in that it is reversible and has the heating element (think electric oven) sandwiched inside. Electric griddles usually have hot spots, normally directly over the element. Here the element is not visible but there are still hot spots particularly noticeable when cooking eggs. So with the other single sided griddle it is usually possible to flip it over and map the location of the element so food can be arranged to avoid the hot spots, here it is trial and error.
One end of the device has a notch and the base a corresponding raised area that fit together. This creates a level surface. This is not terribly obvious but care should be taken that the plate is situated correctly before cooking.
While this small appliance permits most things to be cooked without adding fat (do not use cooking sprays on the surface) things like eggs need help and were a consistent sticking problem. I felt lucky if I managed to get them off the griddle in one piece. In the end, the ceramic coating performed in a disappointing manner.
Given the heat of the unit I was surprised at the grill’s lightweight black plastic base. A drip plate rests on the plastic base with the grill/griddle placed above. Guide grease that accumulates during cooking to the holes in the plate which will then accumulate to the drip pan below.
Note the grill/griddle plate is not dishwasher safe, it should be washed in warm soapy water and dried. The black plastic base is dishwasher safe although I would hesitate just because it feels so flimsy that I would not risk it with harsh detergents and the high heat of the dishwasher. The instructions state the lightweight metal drip tray should be periodically wiped-out, but I see no reason not to wash it in warm soapy water when needed. The electrical cord is not submersible,
It would be helpful if the numbers on the dial were larger, they are rather difficult to read. On the grill I toasted a couple of rolls, prepared a veggie garden burger, red bell pepper strips, hot dogs and onions. On the griddle I cooked turkey bacon, eggs and pancakes.
Along with the suggested cooking temperatures often being too high, the cook times on the chart were also hit and miss – sometimes too long, sometimes too short whether a five minute preheat was required after the temperature was reached, or not. Time and patience will be necessary to nail down the precise time and temperature for favorite foods.
The grill is good-sized and should cook enough food for a family of four or six. I went to the manufacturer’s website and at the time of this review, the reversible grill/griddle was not listed in the products and there were no recipes. I did read some complaints about the ceramic coating that was also used on another electric griddle.
Overall the device works reasonably well, but some foods will require fat added to the surface which I hoped to avoid. The provided cooking information is of limited use and I have questions about the longevity of the ceramic coating even when handled with great care. And, while I normally do not mention cost, at this price point (currently around sixty dollars) it seems a bit high.
I think my only critique would be, it would be nice if it came with a lid because if you're cooking salmon or something, the splatter gets everywhere!
Makes good diamond marks on chops - steaks.... put em on at 10 oclock, turn em to 2 oclock ! Diamond marks!!
Perfect - just make sure to preheat to desired temp for at least 10 minutes - it will get really hot till temp reaches say, 375, then it will slowly reach equilibrium - pretty much all over. Just like your oven - preheat it....
I do steaks and chops on it and never had to use lube... just weight em down with a grill press!
The manual for the grill shows what things you can cook and at what temperatures, but it does not cover eggs, which is odd since that is one of the main things people will cook on this grill (and it's pictured on the box). That being the case, I first attempted scrambled eggs at the 200F setting and it cooked them extremely fast, so fast that I overcooked them. I then tried 3 sunny-side-up eggs, and I tried to turn the temp down a bit further to the warm setting, and even that cooked them a little too quickly. Trying to get the eggs off and presentable on a plate was another challenge that I failed at, and you can see my attempt in the photos I've attached. They could be better, much better, yes. My wife later on tried to cook pancakes at the manual-recommended 400F setting, and she found that it cooked so fast that it started to burn. She turned it down and had much better success. Getting pancakes off the grill was easy, but eggs were a challenge. Perhaps we will try and different spatula. I can say right off that for scrambled eggs, it gets too hot and you'll likely overcook them. You also need to take care with scrambled eggs because the sides of the grill are very low.
There are some ridges in each corner of the ceramic plate (pictured) and I don't know what the purpose of these are for.
The grill was easy to clean and it's nice to be able to unplug it and drop it in the sink. All issues aside, we are having marginal success with it, so we will keep at it and update our review in the future. Our main issues right now with it are all seem to be problems with temperature control, and I'll admit that it might take some time to learn how best to use the grill. The base heats up extremely fast, and controlling the temp is proving to be difficult. For the money, I would think there are better options available that have a higher build quality.
I hope this review was helpful, and if you have any questions about the grill, just ask in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them quickly.
