For my test, I cut some tiny potatoes I had on hand into small wedges and tossed them with olive oil, as you can see in the photos. I put the potatoes in the oven in a single layer so they'd cook evenly without stirring, set the oven on 400F (the maximum temperature) and the timer for 20 minutes. The result was, as you can see, evenly cooked, nicely browned potato wedges.
The oven feels well made, and it's easy to use. The one downside is that it's very large relative to the size of the cooking tray, which is a significant issue in my tiny kitchen. On the other hand, it's a lot more efficient than heating up my regular oven in order to heat or cook a small volume of food.
There are a number of small countertop ovens and toaster ovens that include a convection feature and are versatile, but they typically have exposed heating elements and are harder to keep clean, and can catch fire when drippings or oil hit the heating element- something that can't happen with an "air fryer" like this.
I'll be testing this oven with different foods, and if I discover anything interesting, I'll add it to this review.
I've since done eggplant slices- workable, but not ideal; sweet potato, whole and fries (very good); frozen squid rings (a greasy mess, but not the oven's fault); and breaded puffball slices(good).
Tlapia fillets seasoned with salt and pepper and a tiny bit of olive oil came out perfect- about 8 minutes at 350. I only wish I could put more than one fillet at a time in. Jumbo shrimp dipped in seasoned flour, egg, and breadcrumbs came out with a nice crust, except the pattern on the bottom of the basket was embossed in the crust. I'm going to try some baked goods next.
As you can tell, I like this little oven. So why only four stars? Mainly because it's very bulky and doesn't have much room inside. I have to carry it upstairs and down between my little kitchen and my basement as it takes up too much room on my counter. it doesn't have enough room to cook more than one or two servings. It's fun for quick cooking, but not practical for entertaining.
Update 3: It's great for cooking bacon, if you don't mind cutting the slices in half. Takes about 5-7 minutes at 375. When the bacon is done to your liking, pour off the fat that collects in the bottom of the drawer, and dump the bacon onto a sheet of paper towel. It's a particularly good way to cook bacon for salads and garnishes.
Update 4: I've been using this little oven so much and finding it so handy that I've upped my review to five stars.
Right when I got it, I put in some raw onions because that is all I had in my house. They cooked to a crispy golden brown and they were amazing
Next I seasoned some raw fish, I put a little oil on it and put it in the fryer for 10 mins. It was cooked perfectly, I did not have any pans to clean, and the fish was crispy and golden brown.
You can buy a fryer 3x the price of this one, but from what I have used it for and the research I have done, this fryer can do it all.
Already I'm whipping up some favorite food that I haven't eaten in so long due to avoiding heavy oils in cooking. I'm the sort of person who would never own a deep fat fryer (for a number of reasons), this machine allows me to treat my family to healthy, crispy, and delicious food. My hubby, who has a damaged gallbladder is super excited about eating "not fried fried food" which does my heart good. The manual explains how to use it (really a no brainer!) and includes some good basic recipes that work well as a start. There are endless recipes here (lots of cookbooks on the subject) and online....the possibilities are endless! FYI: I find this size to be perfect but might not be big enough if you have a large family. 5 stars, highly recommended!
TIP: I have heard it being said that the propellant in cooking oil sprays can break down Teflon and can make it peel off with ANY air fryer, it is recommended to simply place your oil in a small spray bottle for usage instead. This saves money as well! If you want to make batter dipped food, you can....simply freeze your batter dipped food (right after dipping)first before air frying. It still tastes great and is much less mess to clean up, freezing keeps the batter intact so it will stay on the food whilst cooking. I lay my food on a silicone sheet (for easy removal) before popping in the freezer. You can also prepare things like Tempura in advance this way....very convenient!
