It does dampen sound, but it's such an inefficient way to warm up or practice that it's not worth using.
1.) It's hard to breathe. It has two little nostril holes, so you'll be constantly pulling it off to take a breath.
2.) Your voice has nowhere to go and bounces right back down your throat. This is an uncomfortable experience that you don't want to endure for an entire warm up or practice session.
3.) It limits your facial movement so you will not create the same space that you usually would.
I warmed up for 10 minutes with it. I regretted warming up to the top of my voice. The returning air pressure in the high range is very uncomfortable. I don't recommend singing at full volume because of the returning air pressure. I don't recommend this product for opera singers. After using it, my voice just felt weird and maybe a little hoarse the rest of the day.

I'm honestly amazed at how well this thing works. I use it to practice in my apartment, where the walls are so thin we can have conversations with our next-door neighbors, and I haven't gotten any complaints (yet).
Pros:
-- Cuts out a good amount of sound. Will even reduce sound some when held slightly away from the face, and that way you can hear yourself enunciate better
-- Comfortable against the face, even when smooshed down due to paranoia
-- Small, portable, sturdy; can be thrown in the bottom of a bag without worrying
Cons:
-- Strong rubber smell right out of the box, but it dissipates after a few days
-- A little hard to inhale through if pressed firmly to the face, easier to tilt it or pull away slightly to inhale
-- Challenging to situate properly with the strap on (or maybe that's just me/my weird head shape...)
-- If you open your mouth very wide to sing it might not fully cover the mouth and nose. I tested it out and only had trouble covering everything when I stretched my jaw as wide as I possibly could, but it could be a problem for some
tl;dr: Go for it. The pros are well worth the price and the cons are negligible. I would watch the videos on their website to get an idea of the sound reduction you can expect.

Experimented with it in my apartment with my roommates. Didn't seem to dampen sound much more than 20 or 30 percent. You could still hear me singing in my mid range from the living room with the door closed. We likened it to the dampening of singing into a pillow. And it's equally kind of suffocating. Will be returning, not the magic silencer I had been hoping for. Perhaps my expectations were misplaced.

At first I couldn’t figure out why my headstrap wasn’t adjusting the way it was supposed to. I sent them a photo of my problem and they sent a photo back with the solution. I am not a singer but have taken vocal coaching to lower the pitch of my voice and increase projection for a more commanding voice for my line of work. Putting the mask on allows me to practice belting out commands at full power, being able to focus on the technique without being concerned about being too loud or how it might sound to other people in my building. I have been able to develop more projection and power, and when pulling the mask off mid-exercise the sound just booms. It is similar to training with leg weights when you run and then having all that extra power when taking the resistance away. It is great for foreign language drills when you don’t need to hear yourself but merely get the practice in, without feeling self conscious. Needless to say it is great for rehearsing anything in any way if you want to do so with a measure of discretion.

Did a detailed product review online for this item. Not bad, not great, not quite worth the price. Definitely helps to dampen sound but not a much as expected, especially for a powerful vocalist that projects. The strap is kinda a joke cause the unit itself is a little too heavy to keep on your face hands free and uncomfortable. All in all, not bad but again not the best. Still needs a little work and maybe a slight price reduction.

I was VERY hesitant about purchasing this product. I read ALL the reviews on it before I purchased it. I came to the conclusion that the fit really depends on the size of your face! I don't think that it will fit well on people with smaller faces. Three things that u have to do is: 1) check for any breaks in the product, 2) make SURE that u wash the product with Dawn, or some other gentle cleaner, 3) that you let the product for at least 3 or 4 days.
I live in a very nice senior building, and I cannot disturb other residents. Once you do all the steps I wrote, ESPECIALLY the cleaning part, (that residue on the product will REALLY irritate your skin once it touches it). I believe you will have a good experience with it. It SUBDUES your voice enough so that the sound stays in the room! It has helped me to not be fearful of being heard when I sing out.
I meant to add let this product AIR out for a few days before using it.

Dampens voice but also interferes with singing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 20, 2019Verified Purchase
Lone positive: this item does indeed substantially reduce volume.
Negatives: I found it impossible to sing correctly while using this item without making it so loose it was worthless.
I found it almost impossible to keep my voice in a forward placement.
I'm trying to learn how to sing. Practice with this isn't going to help, it'll set what technique I have back.

After a few adjustments, I’m very happy with this!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2021Verified Purchase
I’m a professional singer and I’ve been wanting to buy this for a while, but didn’t wanna buy it from an American website, so I was very excited when I saw it was available on here! Until I saw the reviews. They were so mixed, making me very unsure. But I decided to buy it in the end, and now I’m so happy I did! The walls of the building I live in are so incredibly thin, so I’ve never been able to fully warm up or sing without holding back or feeling self conscious, but I did a warmup yesterday and it felt so good to finally do it full out! The beltbox blocks out a good bit of the sound but I can still hear myself which is what I wanted. People have mentioned that it didn’t fit their faces and air was leaking out, and I have quite a small face, but I found that by putting it higher on my face no air leaks out, and although I can’t wear my glasses with this on, that doesn’t bother me because I don’t really need them whilst warming up anyway. The few little drawbacks are that it’s difficult to comfortably breathe in this, and when I do my throat starts to dry out. But I just open it slightly between each inhale and that works fine. The other small drawback is that the strap is way too tight even when loosened, but I prefer to hold it anyway. So my personal opinion is that a good portion of the 1-star reviews are from people who didn’t take the time to make some adjustments to make the beltbox work for them. I’m very happy with it, so I would definitely recommend this!

A bit small for full vocalisation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2019Verified Purchase
I was really excited to buy this product and I had high expectations. It does what it says, however it's difficult to use the elastic provided that fixes the mask on your face (it slips) and the space provided is also challenging when you try to vocalise certain things, during warmup or otherwise. Lips and trills for example. However, it's a very useful tool overall and I hope the company keeps developing the design. It's a lifesaver for those with no personal space to practice.

Great for doing vocal exercises
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2019Verified Purchase
I was looking for a device or a booth that would allow me to sing without disturbing my neighbours. The insulation in my apartment is horrible, so I needed something that would at least decrease half of the decibels.
I've tested it and recorded myself using the Beltbox and singing without the Beltbox, and I'm very impressed with how little you can hear. I think my neighbours can probably still hear me vaguely at a distance, but definitely much less than without using the Beltbox.
One little thing that bothered me is that the strap pushes the Beltbox so closely on your face, that I find it hard to breathe. I tried to adjust the strap, but even then it's still uncomfortable. I therefore don't use the strap.
I still give it 5 stars, because I think it's great value for your money. It's easy to use and it fits in your bag.
