Three 11 year olds boys bodies were found tortured and though the person thought responsible for their murders was killed in a hit and run at the time Matts own mentor and others were never convinced he was the real perpetrator.Matt had actually discovered one of the boys bodies himself and it had affected him badly.
Now nearing retirement a boys body is found in circumstances not unlike his old case.
Matt and his team become embroiled in a game of cat and mouse with the killer who seems to know personal details about Matt`s life as well as having access to photgraphs of locations of the original murders.
This is a standalone novel but I`m sure the characters would lend themselves to another great series.
It has everything you could want from a crime thriller, the plot is cleverly written and the detail draws you into the investigation. There are twists and turns and a great surprise ending.
Yet another brilliant read from Joy Ellis.
Thanks to Joffe books for the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
Unlike some procedurals in which an antagonistic or dysfunctional relationship exists between the primary investigator and their superior, Detective Matt Ballard, despite his own demons and secrets, works in a nurturing and supportive environment. Quite a change from many similar books I've read which become heavily reliant on friction between detectives and superiors to propel the story forward.
I found this story to maintain the suspense throughout and managed to lift the veil on the true nature of the crime until the end. Brilliant work Joy Ellis!
I've already started reading Captive on the Fens and was pleased to see the pathologist, Professor Rory Wilkinson appear in this story as well. He's a great character.
This riveting crime thriller earned every one of the 5 stars I gave it!
