Top Customer Reviews
While these two toned pencils ARE super cute and they screamed to be held, let's face it, in the classroom the last thing we want to hear is a pencil sharpener grinding away in the corner interrupting our lesson. So I thought I'd give these pencils a few tests to see how they would perform in the classroom.
Test 1: Durability:
I wrote with the BIC Xtra Fun pencil for three minutes straight. I also wrote with a yellow number 2 pencil for three minutes straight. Then I compared the points of the lead. The BIC pencil did have more lead. That means less time up out of the seat sharpening.
Test 2: Breakage:
When kids are bored they sometimes break their pencils as an excuse to stand up and go sharpen them. I put the same amount of pressure on both leads to see how the pencils would break. The BIC Xtra Fun pencil broke cleanly which was kind of cool. The yellow number 2 pencil broke with jagged edges. I don't think the BIC break will deter kids from pushing on their pencil leads. It didn't deter me. In fact, I sharpened the pencil again just to see if it would break as cleanly the second time. I wanted to sharpen it a third time to see if it broke the same way again, but I stopped myself.
Test 3: Erase Test:
I felt both pencils erased adequately, but the BIC X-tra Fun white latex eraser left little to no eraser dust. It was a VERY clean erase.
So you're probably wondering why I would give this pencil only three stars. It's because of the "catch." I am so picky about my pencils, that if they catch, or get stuck, on the paper while I'm writing I will not use them. These pencils DID catch on the paper when writing. That made it difficult to keep writing. I found myself holding on to the paper because the paper would move around as the pencil was catching on it. I wondered if maybe this was just one pencil, not all of the pencils. Nope. All of the pencils made the same catch on the paper.
My son did not notice this problem. He's not as picky as me.
Overall, these are a solid purchase. They'll definitely attract the kids (and parents!) because they are as their name suggests...Xtra-Fun!!
Let me start my review of these pencils with their unique appearance. No more boring yellow and wood colored pencils. These pencils look trendy and modern with their fun, vibrant colors. Young kids are going to like them for this alone. And if you have a teen who has to have the newest trend in school supplies, this is a definite must-have.
Going beyond the physical appeal of these pencils, i need to comment on their performance. Because I am truly a skeptic, when i read the packaging and saw the claim that these pencils are made of "Ultra-solid, break-resistant leads" and had "Long-lasting leads and erasers", i was thinking "Oh Sure". It wouldn't be the first time a company exaggerated its product's performance. So I really put these pencils to the test. And test them I did. I used them daily for two weeks and the results of my testing i found to be quite impressive. I liked the way the lead wrote smoothly across the page, and how the points didn't break as i have a heavy hand when I write. Also, I only had to sharpen the pencil once after two weeks of taking several legal-size pages of notes. And, as anyone who has ever had to do any kind of research knows, there is a lot of either crossing-out or erasing in note-taking. The latex-free eraser hardly looks used even after all my corrections and it leaves no smudge marks on the paper. A couple of Bonuses: They are certified Non-Toxic so I am comfortable buying them for two of my grand kids starting school this fall. Also, the pencils are slightly flexible and are quite comfortable in your hand and don't slip from my grip when I'm writing.
In summary, I found these pencils everything they claim to be on the package and more. They are durable, attractive, and FUN! BIC has long been a quality producer of fine writing instruments for as long as I can remember and in my opinion is a company you can trust.
