5.0 out of 5 stars Good solid quality product
By Dave J. on May 18, 2018
I'm not a kid, I'm a partially paralyzed geezer with a wheelchair obsession. Bought the Bikestar to cannibalize the front end to attach to a home-brew trike rear end. Nothing's perfect, but I was amazed at how much quality was built into this thing for a hundred bucks delivered to my front door. ......Today my housekeeper (don't think for a minute that a gal can't be a good mechanic!) and I finally got the prototype assembled and took it for a test drive.

I wasn't trying to reinvent the manual wheelchair, this was supposed to be part of the learning curve how to build an electric mobility scooter. Needed to find out if the frame geometry and wheels would negotiate a standard 4 inch curb, which is a showstopper for nearly all wheelchairs and mobility scoots. ......It handled the 4 inch curb with a bit of body English, about what I was hoping for. But the surprise was that as a manual wheelchair, it completely outclassed my regular wheelchairs. It seemed like it was rolling downhill 80% of the time, I kept looking back to see if my housekeeper had sneaked up and was pushing it. I did better one-handed (the other hand needed for steering) than two-handed with my regular chair. And I discovered that with my left leg (which still has some function remaining) I could push it along...... well, the front half of the thing was ripped from a push scooter! ...... So my housekeeper and I are like "what the hell did we just do?"

It wouldn't have been possible without the Bikestar front end. (I explored other possibilities.) A good front end is a complex chunk of mechanicals and a couple of rank amateurs either gotta find one to cannibalize, or spend the next year figuring out how to home brew their own. I don't have that year available for that purpose.

Five stars. Real easy.

[Photo is prototype about an hour before we had it finished and out the front door for the adventure. Lots of Schedule 40 3/4" aluminum pipe and Hollaender fittings. The cardboard box from Amazon Prime was an almost-last-minute funny idea to turn it into a delivery truck. I put a sign on it "Transportes Cojos S. A." (Crippled Guys Hauling Company) and the first thing we did with the contraption was to haul the trash out to the dumpster.]

1.0 out of 5 stars Scooter defective -- stem won't rotate fully right
By shannon johnson on September 1, 2018
After assembling the scooter, I noticed that while the handlebars turned fully left, they only turned to the right about half way. Thus, if you were to try to turn right while riding the scooter, you'd have to make a gradual arc instead of turning more sharply. I thought maybe I'd assembled something wrong, so I removed the stem to see. Inside, the metal coupler (not sure on the name) has a couple of notches that stick out to stop the handlebar stem from rotating too far in either direction (see the picture). That's fine, but the metal coupler was crooked, so the handlebars would rotate too far one way and not far enough the other way. I tried to turn the metal coupler so the notches were evenly balanced, but it wouldn't budge, as it's pressed into the frame itself. Thus, the scooter was defective.

In other reviews, the V brakes on this scooter are department store quality, meaning poor. They don't spring out to provide clearance from the rim, but rather stick one way or the other. I adjusted the tension screw to balance the spring tension, but they still seemed shoddy.

Also, the plate where you stand is rather small, so you can't rest both feet on the scooter easily. This means you have to ride like a one-legged flamingo. Finally, the kickstand is disappointing, as you have to reach your hand down to move it back.

I agree that the instructions are poor, but I'm not sure why the company can't just ship the scooters with the front wheel pre-assembled. Adjusting brake pads is a skill that is probably more hassle than most non-bicycle people are expecting, and the instructions actually lack information about how to adjust the brake pads. In fact, the instructions don't even indicate that you need to orient the brake shoes from a vertical to horizontal position.

After spending an hour assembling it, then another hour troubleshooting it, I spent another hour de-assembling it and trying to fit it back into the box to ship back to the company.
