And although its only been a few months, I am very impressed. I have given these things more than enough reason to go out on me in this short time, yet they not only continue to work, seemingly unharmed, but even saved everything downstream from them.
So what did I do? I used the same type of cable for both my 5v and 20v runs. I....managed to mistakenly plug in 1 end of a 5v light strand into the 20v wire, while the other end was plugged into the 5v. Thus feeding my lights and this regulator's 5v line with 20v. Only the short 1m strip of light between the 20v v+ and 5v+ was harmed, the other 20 meters which were connected to it in the other direction were fine, and didn't even react to the mistake (the 1m I killed went full white due to overvolt). Actually, the last 5 lights of that 1m still work fine (color changing and all), so I think the regulator managed to successfully sink the voltage down to near the 5.24V it normally operates at.
I probably hurt their lifetime, but this thing and 100$ worth of lights that should have been instantly fried are still working like a champ!
(And I really deserved to have everything fried. I plugged in my miss-wired devices 3 times trying to diagnose the issue. And the last time I removed the fuse I had on the 20v+ and let it run for 5 seconds)
If you do notice a voltage drop, ensure it is not due to incorrect wire size by measuring voltage at the regulator. If the regulator is not supplying a steady voltage, you may need to check your power source. Even if your psu is rated for a higher voltage and current than you should need, it might not actually provides both at the same time. If your 20v supply drops to 6v when pulling high current there isn't anything this thing can do.
And to any other amateurs considering using multiple of these to power a long light strip, be sure not to connect VCC of your lights to multiple regulators/power supplies. You can plug everything in like normal, but cut the VCC half way between the 2 regulators or power supplies. This will ensure each regulator is actually powering the lights their intended to, and ensures that the some devices will power off if a power supply or regulator dies instead of overworking other power sources. And, additionally, largely reduces the risk from an accidental overvolt.
Using this to power both a Bluetooth receiver and USB audio-to-PCM optical converter in an autosound environment. After just over a year and a hot, humid summer, still going strong. Feeding power via a relay that activates when vehicle's ignition is on.
Measures consistently over 4.95 volts output both when the vehicle is running and feeding 13.8 volts and when the vehicle is not running but ignition is on feeding only 12.4 volts. Excellent solution for a low price.
Perfect 12v to 5v for my cell booster.
Eliminates use of inverter to use a device when no ce when no converter is
