I have had this vacuum for over a month now. It still runs a good 3 or 4 times on a charge for my 1000 sq ft apartment and yes I use it on the tile too. It literally picked up spilled chex mix this morning. Now if youre the type of person who puts off cleaning for 3 months then goes on a rampage and vaccums up months worth of dust, debri and tears off of your carpet, this little guy may not work well for you. But if you're like me, a stay at home mom who runs over the floor real quick every other day just to keep the crawling baby from getting covered in the toddlers crumbs, I can not recommend this enough. SUPER in love with this vaccuum. It works better that the stick vaccuum the office at our apartments bought (my husband works maintenance) which is literally crap and cost them $300, Mine is awesome <3
I have two French Bulldogs that seemingly never stop shedding and paired with hardwood floors my home can quickly become a hair-tumbleweed laden mess. So we get a lot of use of our vacuums and especially those that are geared toward pet hair. I also have a Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hardwood Floot Vac that I've been using for a few years so I'll be directly comparing the XRT to that product as well.
The BOLT is an interesting concept; this is in essence a traditional handheld vacuum, a.k.a. a "dust-buster", that pairs with a longer stemmed handle and brush-head to offer a more convenient and more ergonomically friendly cleaning experience. So reviewed as a traditional vacuum the BOLT would perform quite poorly. However, compared to other hand-held vacuums the BOLT is actually a good performer.
Out of the box assembling the BOLT is quite easy and no tools are required. The main folding handle is already assembled and simply unfolds and locks into place. Pairing the brush-head is also extremely easy and because of the locking mechanism there's only one obvious way to snap the brush-head into place. That's it!
The included charging adapter plugs into a wall (note: this is a large format adapter) and will charge the vacuum in 8 hours. That is, in two words, A LOT, of charging time for the advertised 20-minutes of continuous use. That's right, 8 hours of charging for 20 minutes of actual vacuuming. The power button on the vacuum changes color to indicate the status of the battery:
• Green LED = Full battery
• Red LED = Low battery (blinking red when charging)
The XRT Pet differs from it's baby-brother BOLT in that it has more power 14.4v versus 12v and a slightly battery life 20-minutes versus 15-minutes. You'll also get the ability to adjust the cleaning power between "normal/high" on the XRT using the '+' and '-' buttons.
The BOLT gets high marks for convenience. Since the power unit of this vacuum is really a detachable handheld vacuum it's easy to unsnap the vacuum from the handle for hard to reach spot and then snap the entire thing back together again. The handle folds forward and backward too and that makes getting the brush-head under furniture or in awkward spots easier.
In upright mode the rotating brush heads can make small work of everyday debris particularly on area rugs. My dogs are notorious for bringing small bits of our backyard into our home and getting out the BOLT for a quick spot-clean is a lot easier than getting out our canister vacuum or bigger upright.
The single biggest issue I have I mentioned before - 20 minutes of cleaning is not a lot, even for small jobs. Running the BOLT up and down our main hallway will all but deplete the battery. So in the short amount of time we've had this vacuum we're finding ourselves reaching back for the corded PowerEdge for most of our regular cleaning jobs.
Compared to the Bissell PowerEdge 81L2T -
For bigger jobs such as getting a lot of dog hair off our floors the PowerEdge is our go-to vacuum. The BOLT just cannot compare or keep up because of the extremely limited battery life. The PowerEdge is corded and also quite a bit more powerful at picking up hair and small debris, however, is not great with bigger debris and cannot be used at all on area rugs. So there is still a spot in our home where the BOLT comes in handy particularly because of the rotating brush head.
Compared to the Bissell BOLT 12v (model 1313) -
The BOLT XRT Pet is in my opinion the better of the two BOLT models I've tried. You'll get a slightly longer battery life, a more powerful vacuum (14.4v versus 12v), a power adjustment button, and a docking station for storage/charging. The XRT is more expensive but in my experience a more capable machine.
(+) Convenience. Bissell is great at making convenient appliances that make cleaning easier and faster. The BOLT is no exception. From the articulating handle to the ability to use this vacuum as a hand-held or traditional upright this is a very convenient machine.
(+) Style. I gave high marks to the regular BOLT and the XRT is exactly the same form factor, however, uses a lot more purple colored plastics. My wife loves it and I just tolerate it. So I'll leave this in the "good" section.
(+) Storage. The vacuum is lightweight and folds in half for easy storage in closets. The addition of the stand/charging dock is a nice feature though I should mention that this is a very cheap piece of plastic but it does the job.
WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT:
(-) Battery. The battery in the BOLT is nickel-metal hyrdide. This type of battery has some well documented limitations and disadvantages compared to Lithium-ion batteries. Being limited to short bursts of cleaning (20 minutes) is a big detraction.
(-) Charging time. The NiMH battery in the BOLT takes up to 8 hours to fully charge!
(-) Performance. The Bissell PowerEdge outperforms the BOLT XRT in most areas and is considerably cheaper albeit a corded appliance.
Consider the applications you intend for a small, handheld vacuum before investing in the BOLT XRT. This product has some serious limitations that really limit the types of jobs it can do. I would recommend the PowerEdge if you're after a more long-lived pet hair vacuum.
No, the seating mechanism unit is not broken in any way, and yes, I'm doing it correctly (or at least, per the instructions). If you can get past this in-and-out violence, it is an adequate vacuum.
