Assembly was a snap, quite literally, as all it took to get it running from out of the box was to attach the hose, wand and floor nozzle to the base.
The vacuum works like a champ on hardwood and linoleum floors, picking up everything. My upright doesn't do half the job this one does! On carpeting, I found that the lack of a spinning brush means that it doesn't work quite as the upright.
On draperies and cushions the vacuum was excellent. The ability to adjust the suction power meant that I was able to get the power just right. It removed dog hair no problem. I was quite pleased.
The canister is lightweight and even my eight-year-old had no problem dragging it around the floor. Unlike some reviewers we had no problem with the unit turning over. The size of the bag for the vacuum (that's right, this is not a bagless vacuum) is pretty small, so a lot of dirt will require more frequent bag changing than you might be used to.
The cord on this baby is nice and long. I didn't measure it, but I had no trouble using the vacuum throughout the main floor of my house. The automatic cord rewind is nice. Unfortunately, my eight-year-old violated the instructions, and pulled the cord out beyond the red line, and now it will rewind all but the last six or so inches. As a matter of fact, I cannot even force the cord the rest of the way in. That's unfortunate.
The BISSELL Opticlean Canister Vacuum is a very good vacuum cleaner, being a best fit for those with hardwood floors and a minimum of carpeting. It's a great all-around vacuum, and handles pet fur very well indeed. It's lightweight, easy to use and fantastically easy to assemble. I highly recommend it.
Nice large rear wheels should keep it from tipping over unless you really yank it around. Black plastic matte finish. A push button top in the front opens to reveal an upholstery and crevice tool that are easy to get to. I question the durability of the thin, plastic hinges, though. You may snap the lid off if you're not careful. Sturdy metal extension handle with a push button extender that's easy to use in order to raise or lower the height. There is also a plastic push-button slider at the top but it seems Bissell has deliberately made the holes so tiny that you can't use it to vacuum the things you may pick up. Plan on having to turn the cleaner toward you to suck up anything you might pick up or you'll have to disconnect the hose each time. Either way it's annoying.
Both the on/off button and the cord rewind buttons are on the rear of the machine. There is a raised plastic symbol to help you determine which is which. Because the machine and symbols are both black it's hard to see which is which unless you're in good light. Eventually you'll remember which button does what but I wish the symbols were easier to distinguish.
As with every canister vacuum I've used in the past, the "flexible" plastic hose doesn't bend easily. There's an obvious need to keep it from kinking while pulling the vacuum around, but plan on fighting with it when putting it away for later use. The hose is also very, very short compared to the old canister vacuums I remember. This hose just barely reaches from the canister to the top of the handle. As a result, you'll likely find this canister bumping into the back of your feet as you pull it around. Step backwards and you'll likely trip over it.Read more ›
Here are my thoughts:
- It's quiet. Very quiet. I've never heard a vacuum so quiet. You could easily have a conversation while this is running.
- The hose / wand build quality is fine.
- The suction power is MORE than adequate for household use. It's not up to shop-vac power. But then again, it's not a shop-vac.
- The overall build quality is good. I would be gently on the latches that open the compartments but when it's closed it's very solid.
- The wand does attach to the unit for storage but it's a small piece of plastic that holds it so I'd be gentle with that.
- It came with 5 bags - a nice touch!
- It has several filters which are reusable.
- The cord is VERY long. Probably over 12 feet.
- Assembly is very simple.
- Definitely read the instructions though as Bissell did put many little features into the unit.
- The brush and crevice attachment are stored inside the unit - a nice touch!
- The variable suction power is great.
Things I liked: Very easy to put together and disassemble for storage if you have a smaller space. The hoses snap together and you're done. The tools store nicely in a compartment attached to the vacuum, so they're always there when you need them. There is a button at the bottom to switch from hard flooring to carpet, which raises the brush to change functions. It's also much more quiet on carpet than my regular vacuum. On hard floors it still makes plenty of noise, but on carpet due to the way the vacuum stands, the sound is pretty muffled. I also love that the cord is stored inside the vacuum and there is no need to coil it - with the press of a button, it retracts into the unit. The cord is also marked with yellow and red tape near the end, so you know when you have reached the end of the cord and cannot pull out any more.
Things I did not like: The opening at the mouth of the vacuum is rather small. My regular vacuum has a large rectangular area for suction. This has a small square. On carpet, I was happily buzzing along until I realized nothing was being picked up anymore. I looked at the suction area and realized the tiny area had become jammed with some fuzz/pet hair.Read more ›
