I truly do love this machine after making sure I addressed all of the issues other reviewers noted (thank you!!!) and it's perfect for my apartment which is 1092 sq ft with rental carpet and two dogs (1 small, 1 large) but it's not the machine I would have chosen if I had a large home and a high grade, expensive carpet. It takes up no more room to store than my Shark vacuum cleaner. My criteria for choosing a cleaner was, in order of importance, extraction power, ease of use, lightweight, easily stored. This machine met all of the criteria and I couldn't be happier - especially at the price point.
Just to be clear - I didn't receive any products or compensation for this review, I never take those types of reviews into consideration and rely heavily on reviews from people that aren't compensated for their information. I really wish Amazon would get rid of those!
You press the button up in the handle which extends a piece of plastic to push a lever located in the mid section. The lever is supposed to somehow turn and simultaneously push another piece of plastic down onto a button located on the base that is supposed to release cleaner. It'd be great if that worked. I read a couple other reviews saying that they had the same problem. I used mine twice before this ingenious lever system failed.
I took it apart to see if I could fix it, and honestly I have no idea how it worked the first time. I have no idea how an product design team full of professionals OK'd this product. They must have outsourced the design for the cleaner release to...oh i don't some blind aliens on Antartica.
Having worked with commercial rug cleaners in the past, i thought I might share a 5-star hotel maintenance trade secret with you: if your rug has been foam-cleaned with rug cleaning detergents in the past, your first priority should be to get the residual rug cleaning soap out of the rugs. For that you use a baking staple: citric acid crystals. I used about 1/8 cup of citric acid crystals per tankful for my first pass on my rug with this plus a splurt or two of orange extract for the scent. My wastewater tank was filled with muddy suds from the accumulated soap from past cleanings.
I do not see why Bissell does not cash in on the organic trend by providing a citric acid based post-cleanup rinse fluid. Of course you need soap for the heavy jobs but the job is not done until you have all that soap out of the rug IMO.
My rug is now soft and clean but with no laundry-like chemical smell to it to irritate my nose and eyes.
With all of the good reviews, I'm assuming that I got a defective unit. However, I can't get the handle off to put it back in the box to return it. Huge waste of money.
