Designed for cutting efficiency and the freedom of cordless convenience, the Black & Decker CM1640 16-Inch Cordless Mower is ideal for smaller yards up to 1/8 of an acre. Weighing only 38 pounds, the CM1640 cordless mower is lightweight, compact, and easy to maneuver for great cutting results with minimal effort. It's powered by Black & Decker's 40-volt MAX lithium-ion battery system, and the two included batteries combine to give you up to 30 minutes of mowing.
The CM1640 cordless mower easily starts with just a push of a button, and is a smart, no-mess, no-hassle alternative to gas powered lawn mowers. You'll save time by eliminating the frustration of pull cords, the hassle of mixing gas and oil, as well as trips to the gas station and engine maintenance.
The CM1640 features a cutting height range of 1 to 3 inches and a handy single lever height adjustment raises or lowers all four wheels simultaneously. When beginning to mow, the motor makes a smooth start and then easily tackles thick grass or uneven cutting terrain.
The 16-inch deck is ideal for smaller yards, and the durable and lightweight cutting deck never rusts, and is easy to clean. The soft fabric of the grass bag allows for easy checking by tapping the bag from the bottom to see if it is full. For convenient storage, the mower's handles fold down and over the mower so it fits nicely in small spaces in sheds or garages. Carrying handles on the mower make it easy to lift and carry.

I have had this for 3 full summers now.
I'm not the most conscientious mower of my lawn. It's a clearing in a wooded area, not particularly visible to neighbors, in a rural community with no covenants about grass length, so I don't always feel a great obligation to do anything about the the lawn until it starts to get so deep that the cat gets lost. This mower is fine with that - as long as the length is set at one of the highest settings it will plow right on through any sort of thick grass and weeds - even blackberry bushes (don't worry, I always send a search party for the cat and put him inside first).
It doesn't get caught up on much of anything.
It has hit both a large rock and a half-buried brick and did not suffer any damage (not that I'd recommend trying to mow over such things with any mower - I was probably just lucky that it didn't break the blade.)
It's easily maneuverable around my hilly yard, and so light that I can carry it up the stairs to keep it on the porch.
The bag is very easy to get on and off, and to empty - it has a big handle and you just open the plastic flap and lift it right off. The mower also works without the bag if you want the clippings to land on the lawn, though it isn't designed to be used without it and occasionally when using it that way in long grass the chute will get packed too full, and then the grass clumps need to be unstuck with a stick.
I haven't had any problems at all with the handle loosening or breaking, even with my probably-inadvisable habit of picking it up by the handle to carry it up the porch stairs - though the handle is the hardest part of this to assemble correctly in the first place because of a rather weird gear and lever system.
The batteries have green indicators to show you how fully charged they are.
This mower wasn't too difficult to assemble by one person, even though the instructions had a lot of steps.
The batteries seem to last about 20 minutes each. My yard is too big (approximately 1/4 acre of open grass) to do the whole thing with one battery. Usually I can do it in two batteries, so I try to plan it so that I've got one fully charged and another fully or mostly charged when I start. But if I forget to charge both ahead of time, or if for some reason I can't finish the whole yard with two batteries, then I have to take a long break, because the batteries need to cool down before they'll even start to charge. The cool down seems to take anywhere from 10 minutes to more than half an hour, depending on how hot the weather is and how long the mower has been running. Then the charging of the battery to full power takes perhaps an hour. If you don't want to have to plan or take breaks you might get annoyed with this.
I had hoped the batteries would be the same type as those in my Black & Decker weed whacker - then I would have had twice as many compatible batteries and chargers - but alas they are not the same size, so not interchangeable. It would be nice if the company could standardize that for more of its gadgets.
This needs its orange plastic key to be plugged into it in order to start. That is a good safety feature, especially for those with small children around, because really this thing is easy and light enough for a kindergartner to operate. I don't have kids and I'm a little afraid of misplacing the key, so I never take the key out of the mower, which sort of defeats the purpose.
This mower is small and toy-like. That has its advantages as noted above, but it also means it takes a lot of passes to do the whole yard because the mower is so narrow.
This is working well for me and I would recommend it, with the caveats above.
So my research first led me to many 20" mowers, because why wouldn't I want a larger mower to get the job done faster. But the price of these was usually $400 - $500 and I was ready to spend that on something I didn't know if it would work. As my search moved to lower cost units I found a lot that used nimh batteries, but I was familiar with lithium ion batteries in other products and really wanted the convenience and reliability of one of these types of batteries.
All that said, I finally arrived at the black and decker 16" cordless mower. The product showed up on my door in a fairly large box, but one that was easy to move around. I opened the box and found the mower was easy to assemble. If you read the directions it should only take 10 minutes to put it together. The batteries also show up with a fair amount of charge on them. So once it was assembled it was off to the yard.
The grass was a bit long and it was spring in the northwest, so it was damp to say the least. The grass is also pretty thick. The mower started to bog down in just a couple of places, but as long as I went slow through these areas I never had a problem. I did have to empty the bag twice even for my small yard, so be warned that the bag is pretty small.
After several more times mowing, I haven't had any more issues with bogging down. When I mow I don't finish smelling like exhaust so I haven't minded taking care of the yard mid week or whenever it needs it. So I feel like the key is to not let your grass get too long. Other than that this thing does great.
It also folds up for easy storage. I have a typically new home two car garage that barely fits two cars, so being able to fold the handle down in just a few seconds and then put the whole product on a shelf is an awesome feature that let's me use my whole garage for what's it's met for.
If you've got a typical urban or suburb lawn, this mower will do a great job for you. The light weight of the mower let's you store it easy as well as deal with a yard that may not be very flat. I'm now a convert on the cordless mower.
