Top Customer Reviews
First and most important is that the rear wheels are too far apart to both travel on a typical curb when edging grass along a curb. The distance between the inside edges of the rear wheels is 4.5”, the right wheel (closest to the blade) is offset from the blade by about 3”, thus the left wheel is 7.5” from the edging blade. Typical curbs (at least in my area) are about 6” wide, so the left wheel (farthest from the blade) will not ride on the curb, but hang in mid-air. This situation makes it difficult, if not dangerous, to use the edger on curbs.
Second, the handle on the B+D unit is at about a 30 degree angle from the ground. It is too low for comfortable use by me, and I’m not that tall (about 5’10”). The handle is extendable, but due to the low angle, extending the handle basically makes it longer but negligibly higher. The angle of the handle is not adjustable.
I also find that this B+D unit has a thicker and serrated blade, while the older Craftsman had a thin, smooth blade. The B+D edger makes a wider “groove” or trench along the edge of the grass at the concrete walkway and driveway. It tends to throw a lot of dirt out of the groove or edge. This requires additional clean-up after edging. The thinner blade on my old edger made much less of a mess compared to the Edge Hog.
I do intend to keep the Black + Decker Edge Hog, as I get used to using it more I hope the issue above will ameliorate with practice. But they won't disappear, making the edger inferior to some extent to other designs.
Blade replacements are relatively cheap (6-7 here on amazon)
Very cost effective
Not battery operated! I would pay 2-3x the cost for a battery powered option
Handle is not height adjustable and is rather low
I'm incredibly satisfied with this edger as it worked perfectly without hitches. I would love to see a battery powered variant, improved ergonomics on the handle and possibly a "second" independently adjustable guard in front of the blade to help with curves and dulling blades. My neighbor ordered one after seeing mine in action for the first time.
