Regarding toast, I have had no issues, as it has has been toasting bread evenly for me. However, other purchasers have complained that it burns their toast on the top. Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is no "Top Brown" / Broil” setting, so if you are looking to toast a bagel, or something else you only want toasted on one side, plan on having it toast both sides. Even if you were to use a tray (not provided), the bottom heating element is still burning up electricity right along with your hard earned cash. Ok, so here is a less than perfect solution; place the cut side of the bagel, etc. down facing the bottom heating element. Then lay a piece of aluminum foil over the top of the item to reflect the heat of the top element away from what you're heating. Not perfect, but It does pretty much remedy the problem. On the other hand, considering the price you must pay for this little puppy, it shouldn't be necessary to ‘jerry rig’ it, especially when a fairly simple fix by the manufacturer could resolve the problem entirely. Bad on you Black and Decker!
Not to be entirely negative, I do like the digital timer and oven temperature controls, and it actually does have a 30 minute timer, not just 15 minutes, as some users have reported. This new digital set-up does take a bit of getting used to, but it's nothing major unless you happen to be anti-technology. The instructions are pretty straight forward, so I recommend reading them to minimize any confusion. Overall, I see it as a nice improvement over the toaster oven controls on previous models, though I do suspect the real reason this product isn't as good as it could be is that there are no other competing under-counter mountable toaster ovens in existence. That is, with the exception of older B & D models. This gives Black and Decker little or no incentive to make the improvements necessary to make it an excellent product rather than just a mediocre one. Not to put too fine a point on it, the universal unspoken corporate mission statement, "No competition? No improvements necessary.” seems to be what we're stuck with. That is, unless enough people boycott the product until B & D decides it’s in their best interest to make it better. An unlikely scenario, as there are no alternatives to choose from. Case in point, I bought one despite its shortcomings.
One other thing. I had a heck of a time getting the holes for the mounting hood drilled correctly and had to re-drill them. It could just be a poor ability on my part to follow instructions, but even so it's kind of tough to try and drill up from the bottom. That’s especially the case if your back and neck is too stiff to drill from that angle. That position was definitely a 'no go' for me, so I had to drill from the top down. I don't have any helpful advice on mounting the hood, except to tell you to measure carefully at least twice so that you only have to drill once. You may also need some longer metric screws and extra spacers, depending on the design of your cabinet. You can make extra spacers by using a bunch of small washers. Tip: The original spacers are not snug when placed on the screws, so to keep them from sliding off (a very annoying problem) use a properly threaded nut on the bottom of the screw to keep things in place. If you are replacing an older model use the spacers that came with it, as they fit snugly on the screws.Try Home Depot, Lowe’s, or a nut and bolt specialty store to find longer screws and nuts that will fit properly. Be sure to take the mounting hood with you to be certain you get the correct screws.
The actual placing of the unit into the mounting hood was MUCH simpler on the older models, where by virtue of its design, the toaster oven simply slid into place with ease. On this model, getting it to attach securely to the hood was, for me at least, an exercise in frustration. I'm quite sure my neighbors wondered what I was cursing so loudly about. Ok, I'm not a mechanical genius, but this was way more difficult that it should have been. I seriously doubt that the person who wrote the mounting instructions has actually tried to install one from start to finish on a cabinet that didn't have a flat (flush) bottom. Like I said though, it might just be me. Here's wishing you the best in your mounting efforts. By the way, if your cabinet does have a flat bottom, you'll have a much easier time of it. No spacers or longer screws required.
Now, considering the high price of this unit relative to non under-counter mount models, they should have at least included an oven tray. Even a poorly made one would be better than none at all. In that regard, if you do want a good tray, it's pretty unlikely you'll find one that's a perfect fit. I did a lot of internet searching with no success. First though, I called Black and Decker, but they were of no help at all and suggested that I should "check the internet". Gosh, thanks B & D! That's what I call top notch customer service. Sarcasm aside, it wasn't the representative's fault. It's Black and Decker's apparent lack of interest in providing real customer satisfaction. Fortunately, there IS an oven pan that nicely fits the bill. It's the "TeamFar Toaster Oven Pan Tray with Cooling Rack, Stainless Steel Toaster Ovenware broiler Pan". The size is 8''x10''x1''. Not a 100% perfect fit, but very very good. It's also non toxic, rust free, easy to clean and dishwasher safe. It sells for $14.99 and is available on (of all places) Amazon.com and ships free for Prime members. Just copy and paste the above description within quotes into the Amazon search window and it should pop right up.
Ok, so here's the bottom line. if you really need to have an under-counter mount toaster oven and you can't find, or are unwilling to settle for a good used B & D analog model, the TROS1000D is ok. Let me clarify that a little bit. Years ago I had a good part in a local musical stage production. Though I thought I was great, the newspaper reviewer’s article noted, for all to see, that I was adequate, but not outstanding. That, unfortunately, is how I have to rate this toaster oven.
It doesn't have extra features such as broil function, and timer maxes out at 30 minutes. The rack seems to be in the center of the oven and doesn't automatically open when you open the tray. I can't make croissants in it as it isn't that vertical in space. The installation wasn't hard. It could have had better detailed instructions. Just be willing to bend your back to get those screws in under the cabinet.
It cooks 4 pieces of toast just fine. Which is what I need.
and I like it as it gives you plenty of space back in the kitchen.
Definitely good looking and worth it for the space-saving. Giving it 5 stars as there is nothing on the market that I can find that compares.
