Does it work well? Yes. Toasts four pieces of toast quickly. Its a toaster and it does its job. As an oven is where it really comes in handy. If you have kids, its a great, quick way to heat up chicken nuggets or whatever. Excellent for leftovers. You can stick two slices of pizza in there and heat them up quickly. There is a crumb tray in the bottom that is easy to pull out and clean.
Before you buy this toaster oven though, what I would alert you to is that its on the larger side. Takes up more space on the counter than some other units you might find. Check out the measurements and make sure it will work for you. The width and height are more the issue than the depth.
My only small complaint with this toaster oven is the plug. It uses one of those large three prongs, so it is kind of a big plug that sticks out of the wall quite a bit. I think it would have been better for B&D to attach a right angle plug on the end just for appearances sake.
The short is in the upper heating element, which is encased in a glass tube, which is also protected by a metal sheath. The glass tube has broken, and the heating element is bulging out so that it touches the metal sheath. That's where the electrical short is.
The toaster worked fine until this happened. Looks like a thermal expansion break in the glass tube (ie. from heating and cooling) - which is dumb, because it should be designed to handle exactly that kind of stress.
Breaking like that within 11 months of purchase is not acceptable. It's not helpful that Amazon's product page has no specific warranty info or procedure to help. The Amazon customer service person was nice, but could only give me Black & Decker's website (kinda already figured that out). B&D's website shows nothing specific with regard to warranty period. There is a customer service email link, and I've sent them a note with the description above. Will report back once this has resolved one way or the other. If they make the fix easy, the stars will definitely go up. If it's a hassle, you'll hear the details here.
UPDATE: July 3, 2015: Ok - so far so good, B&D called back the next day and agreed after some questions about the unit, to send a free replacement. I'm bumping the stars up by one - let's see if the replacement arrives on schedule...
Too bad. In my entire married life I've owned only 2 Black & Decker ovens which really did their jobs for about 13 years each! So, of course, when the last one gave out, there was no question of what I would buy again. Right away, however, I realized this one was not living up to that standard and I was so disappointed. Difficult to use controls don't allow you to find your perfect setting and leave it and worse, because of this it was prone to catch fire! I finally got the time to call Amazon to return it, but had missed their return window so I was stuck with it. Amazon suggested I contact Black & Decker, but after looking on Black & Decker's own sight at recent customer ratings for all of their toaster ovens, I think Black & Decker needs to do some serious customer interface and quality control work to get back the reputation their previous ovens garnered for them. I didn't see a product on there with a high enough rating that they could send me in place of this one and I doubt they'd give me my money back, so right now, I'm using one of those $5 loss-leader toasters they sell around Christmas &, ironically, it's much better.
