I've read others that criticize it for the 'old school' analog controls. But you know what, my old one had the digital readout and controls but you had to keep punching the buttons to finally reach the desired temperature and length of time it stayed on. With the 'old fashioned' knobs of this Black and Decker I can quickly turn it to the desired temp and time.. Actually much better, faster, more efficient.
I've found the temp, so far, to be about 20 degrees too high according to the oven thermometer but I've been accustomed to that with toaster ovens in general over the years I've owned them. If I'm aware of that I just adjust the temp accordingly. No real issue.
I first tried it with a couple pieces of bread for toast and it toasted the tops evenly and quickly. The bottoms had the usual uneven spacing of browning typical with toaster ovens due to the rack the bread is sitting on, compared to dedicated toaster. But no real issue here, it was toast.
Next I tried some chocolate, chocolate chip muffins from scratch. This convection oven baked them evenly without my having to rotate the 12 muffin pan to evenly bake. It baked evenly for the entire baking time required. They all rose evenly to the same height and color. Nice... Oh, and I would never have been able to use the 12 muffin muffin pan in my old toaster oven.
I really like this convection toaster oven!
I LOVE the size of this toaster oven and it is just pretty! It is so much more usable than our previous oven and it doesn't take up too much room on our countertop. I have successfully cooked things that I would have only cooked in our larger standard sized ovens previously like casseroles, bread, cookies, etc. It performed just as well as the larger oven. It's also nice not to have to heat up the entire house when I want to cook something. I do have to say that it cooks things more evenly than our previous toaster oven as well.
I was specifically looking for a toaster oven with knobs versus a digital display. How many times have I had products with those fancy digital displays break?! Technology is great, but sometimes I just like to go back to the basics and I mean that in a good way. The knobs are easy to manoeuvre, but I did have a slight challenge making toast the first time. I couldn't quite figure it out. I'm sure that if I would have read the directions better that would have helped though. ;-)
Now...drumroll, please...the reason for 4 stars vs 5 stars? The buzzer! That sucker is LOUD. That's great when I want to be notified so that I can remove items from the oven, but when my kids are asleep, I have a migraine, etc then I would love the option to turn it off or lower the volume. That's definitely not a make or break detail and I would still purchase this toaster oven again. Especially for the great price!
Before I get into my personal observations, I should mention that after reading hundreds of reviews both here and on other online sites there were two issues that I was most concerned about – problems attaining/holding the correct temperature, and the bottom elements not working when making toast. These issues seemed to be the most legitimate and were the first things I checked when we received the oven. Let me address these up front:
Temperature – I did see a variance of about 10-15 degrees each side of the set temperature depending on the situation. With the number of cumulative errors that could effect the temperature – including air leaks, variance in the thermostat and printed temp settings on the panel, ambient temperature, and even true voltage from the electrical outlet – I don't have any problem with what I observed. Yes, some lemons will leak through the QC process, but my unit was well within my personal tolerances.
Bottom Elements – Mine do work, and normally that would be the end of the story. However, I did find it odd that a few people who claimed this was a problem also said they thought that the crumb tray shouldn't be blocking/covering the lower elements. When I read this I was in utter disbelief that anyone could make this mistake, so I went right over to my oven, removed the crumb tray and slid it back in on top of the lower heating elements – AND IT FIT PERFECTLY! I was dumbfounded to say the least.
So the take-home lesson is thus: THE CRUMB TRAY SLIDES INTO THE OVEN FROM OUTSIDE BELOW THE LOWER EDGE OF THE DOOR AND UNDER THE LOWER HEATING ELEMENTS. DO NOT INSERT THE CRUMB TRAY FROM INSIDE THE OVEN WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND ON TOP OF THE LOWER HEATING ELEMENTS. I hope that helps at least a few folks out.
And now for the rest of the story:
+ Big internal size for full-sized baking pans. It will also easily fit a standard 12” frozen pizza.
+ Simple Operation. Only need to set two of the three dials to do anything (our last oven you needed to adjust all three dials plus throw a switch for the convection fan).
+ Inexpensive for the features you get.
+ The browning timer for toasting is spot-on (lower dial). The middle setting is perfect for moderately brown toast. I like that this oven has two timer dials - one for toast (based on browning level) and one for baking (up to 60 minutes). Our last toaster oven had only a single 60-minute timer and it was difficult to get toast done right without having to stand there and watch it the entire time.
- The cord is waaay too short... It could be another 12” longer and I would be happy.
- This B+D oven is much lighter than our smaller, older West Bend unit. Time will only tell if that translates into long-term quality and reliability problems.
- It seems like an awfully large appliance when you're making just a slice of toast.
- The very top and very bottom positions for the rack don't have a stop to keep the rack from easily coming out, and the rack tilts forward distressingly when extended.
= I am not fond of electronic controls in a toaster oven. I personally feel that mechanical knobs may be less accurate but don't have issues with heat or power surges that could ruin electronics.
= I strongly recommend thoroughly cleaning the oven inside and out with a weak vinegar and water solution to remove any lingering machine oil (or whatever) from the factory. If you don't then prepare to have your oven smell like an auto shop for a while until it all burns off.
= For $59 you get the oven with the black outer panels and brushed steel accents. $40 more will buy you the oven with all brushed steel exterior panels – and I didn't feel the need.
= This is one of the larger toaster ovens readily available. Well, it is advertised as “Extra Wide” so I don't know if anyone would expect any different, but there were a few complaints in the reviews about the overall size. Just don't be taken by surprise, especially if you are coming from a standard toaster or even a 4-slice toaster oven.
Overall, this is not an absolutely perfect convection toaster oven but it is great for the price – and that is what matters most to me.
