Now for the not so great things. There is no heat adjustment. This is not a real issue since the iron cooks well and evenly. There is no audible tone telling you when the waffle is done, a green light indicates the waffle is done, but I like mine a bit crispier then the default, so all you need to do in leave it in 15-30 seconds more to your taste. The grills do not remove for cleaning, but they are still easy to wipe down. The hinge on the iron and the overall construction in the cradle seems a bit flimsy, but I had no problems with it, and don't think it will be an issue overall.
The worst part is the handle of the unit. It is made to fold 90 degrees for storage. The hinge is poorly made and it does not lock well in the straight position so that when you go to turn the iron, the hinge actually pops and the handle bends making the turn a bit awkward and that is annoying. I can see someone getting a bit panicky that the hinge bends and tipping over the unit overcompensating and causing damage or injury. Once I noted this flaw, it was a simple annoyance but not enough to say the unit is bad, I worked with it. It still made excellent waffles.
The three stars are there because the price of this unit is high when the negatives I have noted are taken into account and compared to the prices of other similar units that are less expensive.
(makes 3 waffles)
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
1 cup of milk
1 tbsp melted butter
I've had this waffle iron since May, and it hasn't let me down. I use it a couple times a month to make chocolate chip waffles, and I'm impressed every time. It makes a perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside waffle. I lost the drip tray, though! My own fault.
I've only seasoned it with olive oil once (before I first used it), and I haven't needed to since. The waffles easily fall out once they're done. It's also pretty easy to clean (which I do every time unless I want my next waffle to taste like charred chocolate chips)--I just wipe it down with a dry, or lightly damp, paper towel while it's still hot and any left over waffle mix or chocolate chips just slide right off. The outside is a little bit grungy--not as sparkly and spotless as it once was--but that doesn't matter to me at all.
LOVE this waffle iron, and I would definitely buy it again or as a gift.
The only thing I don't like about this waffle is that you have to stand around and wait for the green "Ready" light to come on, and you can't step away and do other things otherwise the waffle might burn. But that doesn't really bother me because I'll either be in the kitchen anyway or I can see it while I'm sitting at my dining room table eating one of the waffles I've already made.
Really this is not a bad iron but not for kids either as they can be rough on things. If no kids and you live on budget, this will work for you most likely. You have to work with the timing...it get a good cook on the iron for the product you want. It cooks grilled cheese pretty good.
Clean up is easy and NO the grilles do not come out. But the grill irons seem to be non-stick. I just wiped them off after it cooled just a little (still warm but not hot) and it came clean.
