"Once I picked up this book, I really couldn't put it down. It's one of those where you tell yourself that you're going to read one more chapter, and then that chapter has a cliffhanger of an ending, so of course you have to read the next chapter, and then that leads to less and less sleep, and that's okay, really. Luckily, I started it on a weekend and got cozy under a blanket, and I didn't move for hours." ~ WordlandReviews.com ***** "...each chapter left me wanting more so it was almost impossible to put down, I love that in a book." ~ A Book Lover's Emporium Book Blog **** "Lyz put her all into this romantic thriller. Blinded is a perfect mix of love, lust, mystery and suspense. From Mara's loss to Joey's determination to bring his brother's death to a closure, Lyz hits the spot with this page turner." ~ We Stole You Book Boyfriend Blog
From the Author
For some, there is a point in a person's life where there is a complete and utter moment of clarity. I was a week from graduating high school when my first moment came. My mother and I got a phone call from a hospital in Maryland that my brother, Sam, a US Naval Corpsman, had died. That single moment changed me. Changed how I looked at and lived my life. When a Navy detail showed up the next morning, my emotions closed inward, and I was thrown into an all-consuming numbness.
For me, personally, I wanted to re-explore those few months of trying to hold onto the past, knowing everything in my life was going to be different from that day forward. My best friend was gone, and he wouldn't be coming back.
I hope you enjoy reading Joey and Mara's story about their struggle to adjust to their new lives and finding a satisfying comfort in each other's arms.
My mom didn’t care what my grades were as long as I kept my knees locked together.
Kym attracted men who were betta fish, those colorful little creatures that look gorgeous, but lived alone because they tended to be territorial, aggressive, and pick fights with anything walking by their fish bowl.
Burritos, beer, beans…I’ll be smelling something all right.
“A catch?” Typical ma. “She makes me sound like a piece of salmon.”
“She better be thinking about losing weight,” Kym chimed in. “Look at all those headstones. I don’t think her fat butt is gonna fit… If it were me, I think I’d prefer to be cremated. I wouldn’t want to deal with a mother who weighed as much as a cow lying on my chest for eternity.”
At least she hadn’t married him before discovering his inability to handle sickness. Which, she realized later, also meant it was highly unlikely that he’d be able to stick around through health, either.
I enjoyed this sweet and sexy story and was surprised to see it was the author’s debut work. The plot was intriguing and the writing was relevant, insightful, observant, and well-paced. I adored both main characters and found them adorable, admirable, and highly relatable, although their families were rather toxic and obnoxious. Blinded was a genre hybrid of women’s fiction, suspense, small town family drama, and adult second-chance romance. I relished the wry humor and steamy bits tucked in between and sometimes right inside the more serious scenes. I plan to peruse my way through this entire series.
Blinded is my first book by Lyz Kelley but won't be my last. Ms. Kelley has delivered a well-written book and populated it with an outstanding assortment of characters. Mara's legs were crushed and she was blinded in the accident that killed her parents and sister. She recovered the use of her legs, but not her eyesight. Her long-ago crush, Joey, returns to town after his brother is murdered. Their story is loaded with action, suspense, humor, drama and sizzle. I enjoyed reading Blinded and look forward to reading more from Lyz Kelley in the near future. Blinded is book 1 of the Elkridge Series but can be read as a standalone. Although there were questions remaining at the end of this book, that I'm guessing will unfold in later books, this is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
This was a wonderful read. Small town boy returns for his brother’s funeral and stays to find his murderer. While there, Joey checks in with his old friend Mara who works in the local flower shop. Mara was blinded in an accident that took her parents’ lives. These two people reconnect in a wonderful story that doesn’t dwell in the brokenness of their lives, but on how they have moved forward. I really liked Kelley’s turn on being dis-abled rather than “handicapped” because I don’t see (pun intended) Mara as handicapped by anything other than her fear from being stalked.
This is my first Lyz Kelley book and will definitely NOT be my last. Highly recommended
Joey went to home to Elkridge for his brother's funeral and he ends out staying to investigate his brother's murder. While in Elkridge he runs into his first love Mara. Mara's life was changed forever when her family was in a car accident. A drunk driver hit them, leaving her parents and her sister dead and Mara permanently disabled. I loved this second chance romance story about Joey and Mara. It is a well written book. I liked that it had both a romance and mystery story lines. This author takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride and you'll love every twist and turn along the way. The supporting characters were wonderful and I look forward to reading more about them in future books.
Well I read this really fast because I love romantic suspense. What I liked was Joey coming back to Elkridge to help heal his family, which by the way is huge, from his brother Sam's killing. The fact that he comes from Seattle, where he is a detective loaded with experience just gives him an edge. Seems like he is the man to catch a killer.
That is the premise Then throw in Mara a high school friend, small town loaded with good cooking and gossip. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can not wait for more in the series.
Joe has a fee sisters I wouls like to know more about. Mara is pretty complex, has a family history and so many talents for a blind woman. Bowing to honor her!! Kym who is Mara's BFF is a hoot and has a story to tell for sure. If not them she surely need a one
OH and an honorable mention to the working wonder dog Buddy I love him ans Gus too ** wink
Family dynamics play a major role in this story. Joey comes from a large Italian family that he is mostly been estranged from for the past ten years. Mara lost her parents in a car accident that left her blind, she only has her brother. This story immediately draws you in and you want to know everything: who killed Joey's brother, who's stalking Mara, how incompetent is the sheriff's department, will Joey stay, what will happen with Joey and Mara's relationship. Not everything is answered in this story so I'm off to read the next story. Looking forward to another exciting story.
This was the most inspiring book that I have ever read. Steve's death was both tragic and mysterious. Joey came home to find out what happened and how Mara was doing. She was blinded by the car accident that killed her parents and sister and is now working in the flower shop. I was so impressed at how the family (Joey and Steve) was brought together including Joey's father who still was not accepting Steve's death. Both Joey and Mara have been potentially put in danger as the local police cannot seem to get their act together. This book is very suspenseful with Romance and various other challenges thrown in. As it turns out, there is much more to this story when you read the author's notes at the end of the book. I look forward to reading the next few books written after this one.
