Bright, Attractive Light With Some Questionable Design Choices

Bright, Attractive Light With Some Questionable Design Choices
I have this red light in the rear, and their white light in the front. I like these lights, they're very bright, visible from wide angles, and they look great on my bike even when they're not on. I take visibility seriously as a biker, and I do not feel safe riding on the same roads with vehicles without bright lights, and I feel safe riding with these. It's not perfect, however. The overall construction of the lights feels pretty shoddy honestly. I would have paid quite a premium to get these exact lights with a hearty aluminum housing, glass lens, and rubber gaskets, but instead I paid like $13 and got this. Plastic-covered plastic with some plastic on top. I've had them for over a year, whacked them, doused them, and dropped them a few times, and they have not broken on me. Perhaps my mistrust of their construction is unfounded, but they feel cheap in the hand, and I suspect they are only BARELY water-resistant. I expect these to break any day now, but I also have another identical backup set and I'd re-purchase these the same day if they broke, so I guess I don't mind all that much. There are a few different light modes like the store page says, Solid Low/Mid/High, Dim Flashing/Bright Flashing, and Strobe. The manual included with the lights includes a little more information such as the approximate runtime for each mode, which brings me to my main complaint about these lights, which is less of a complaint than an observation: The battery life is a joke. It's not really their fault, it's a design constraint. Small lights have even smaller batteries, it's the price you pay for the slim form factor and sleek aesthetic, but it's a bummer nonetheless. When you look at the run times for the different light modes, it becomes obvious that the Dim Flash mode is the only one worth using. The steady beam and strobe modes get less than half the battery life, so don't even bother with them. Use Dim Flashing or Bright Flashing, and you can expect to run these for 4 - 5 hours on a single charge, which is honestly great for most of us most of the time. But I have had them die on me in very unfortunate times. Once on a particularly long ride they died halfway home at around 7pm on a rainy day. I was losing daylight fast and the last thing I wanted was to be on the shoulder of a busy road, in the dark, in the rain, WITH NO TAIL LIGHT. It was a harrowing experience, but again, not the light's fault really. I rode for 6 hours that day, I should have known they weren't going to last the whole time. But I have a plan. Like I mentioned, I have a spare set of these. I've disassembled one of them and plan to modify it somewhat. I'm removing the puny ~500mAh 3.7v lithium battery and running some wiring out of the USB charging port (sealing with hot glue or something) to an external battery with about 10x the capacity. I'm doing this for the front and rear lights and running the wiring as neatly as I can to a central battery, so I should be able to run these all day long on Strobe Mode without worrying about making it back before they die. I'll report back if this project is successful.EDIT: Two years later and I can comfortably recommend these, I have bought several sets now. The original set still works and I use them all the time. The battery life started to decline to around ~3 hours and that became unacceptable to me so I finally did that battery mod I mentioned. The internal battery on these is 500mAh and I removed it, soldered my own wiring in, and bought a 3,700mAh battery at the same voltage and wired both the front and rear lights into it. I haven't fully stress tested this yet, but it works great and my math says this should get me something like 15-18 hours of both lights running constantly on slow blink mode. No complaints.

This bike headlight is awesome! It is super-bright and well-made for the price. What's not to like?...

> USB recharged, so no battery wasting or extra costs for power. Includes a short USB charge cord.

> Good settings, including steady-burning Hi, Medium, and Lo, and flashing Hi, Lo, and a fast strobe. It is VERY bright in general and has a modern, authoritative look on the road due to being a wide bar of solid white light. You won't look to drivers like someone hokey-poking along who should be brushed off. I feel very safe riding with it and have always been seen easily and the higher settings actually significantly light the road. All settings will "get you seen." The strobe might actually be too visually distracting for you and car drivers too; I prefer steady or the slower flashing.

> The clamp is very simple but a good quality rubber strap with an articulating plastic base that has clear notch/detent positions. It seems to be a good design and can mount to frame tubes of various sizes and helmets through their vents. You can make it work many different ways and the light bar can be oriented horizontally or vertically on the mount, so accommodating all kinds of positions and bike setups is doable. There is no one correct way to mount this light, so you just make it work however is best for you. There is no clip-style mount for pack loops or fabric, but you can't have every single thing imaginable.

> Stable on the bike and water-resistant. No exposed delicate parts or easily broken components. The charge pilot lamp is a nice touch.

I have not had it for that long, so I cannot comment on the long-term battery longevity after repeated chargings, but I highly doubt you will be disappointed with this light.

Haven't had a chance to do more than one short "test ride" with this light yet, but so far, I really enjoy it. Recently got a new bike, and my old taillight's mounting bracket doesn't fit on the new bike... so here I am, the newest owner of a Blitzu Cyborg 168T. I thought my old taillight was good, but this light has surprisingly impressed me with how it surpasses the old one.

The rubberized strap allows the light to fit snugly to nearly any size or shape of bike frame, fork, or even a helmet, with no tools involved. If you have multiple bikes, you can easily move this light from one to another in seconds, rather than minutes. (Of course, that also means it's easy for a thief to remove it in seconds... so if you park your bike somewhere, don't forget to remove this light before you walk away.

The light has several modes -- my old one was just flashing or solid. This light has three solid modes (low, medium, high) and three flashing modes (50% flashing, 100% flashing, strobe). Up close, the difference in solid modes is barely noticeable, and I couldn't tell much of a difference between the flashing modes. Maybe the differences are more noticeable from a distance. In any event, the biggest difference is going to be battery life -- as with any LED light, a blinking setting is going to extend the battery life longer than using a solid mode.

If you take longer rides, battery life may be the light's only drawback. While I love that this has a rechargeable battery, and it recharges via USB, it seems that USB-recharged lights don't last quite as long as AA or AAA battery lights. For example, with my old AAA-battery taillight, I only needed to change batteries once (or sometimes twice) a year, but with these newer USB lights, it's recommended you recharge pretty frequently. But the drawback is softened by the fact this recharges via USB connection and they included a cable. Plug it into a PC, or even any (Android) cell phone wall plug adapter. I only wish the cord provided was slightly longer; as seen in one of my photos, the cord is a bit short, so the light dangles above the shelf rather than being able to rest on it (like my headlight can). But the light barely weighs anything and the cord seems to connect well with the USB port, so the cord doesn't appear to be "strained" in any way.

Looking forward to rejoining my weekly "night ride" group as the weather gets warmer -- and to see how well the light can hold up for those rides (sometimes 2 to 2½ hours).

I purchased these lights a few years ago,
Red for the back white for the front.
The quality is outstanding but to my surprise the white light in the front suddenly stopped working after about one season of use.
Probably the rechargeable battery is the problem but I am disappointed that it is not serviceable.
Also noticed the price of these lights have gone up incredibly high compared to what I paid for them.
I do recommend this light but shop around you can find lights of the same quality at a lower price.
