What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

Build and Size:
The phone is nice and feels very sleek. I purchased the white version and it looks beautiful. The back cover feels nice. I absolutely love the golden edges of the phone, it looks good with the white. This is actually a very thin phone and comparing it to an iphone 6s, it is almost as thin. However, it is bigger than an iphone 6s. I actually thought it was going to be too big for my small hands, but I think it is a perfect size. Overall, the phone does not feel or look cheap at all. I have gotten compliments on this phone and when I tell them the price, they are in shock. This phone looks like it costs more than it does.
The performance is great.I have not experienced any lag on this phone. I have a 32gb sd card that is almost full installed on this phone and it has not made the phone lag. I have not tried any games on this phone, so I can’t say how well it performs in that area, but all other apps work great. I have a ton of apps installed and there is no lag at all. I have a Tmobile sim card in this phone and 4g works great. Calls, texts, MMS, and data usage is great on this. No problems at all in that area.
The screen is my favorite part of this phone. Has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. It is crisp and clear. Watching videos on this phone is great and compared to my ZTE Zmax, which had a lower resolution (720 x 1280 pixels), the screen is beautiful to me. The colors are rich and vivid. The brightness on this phone is wow. Not sure if this would be a con for some people, but this phone is super bright on the highest brightness setting. On the lowest setting, it is still pretty bright. The screen also has good viewing angles. One thing though, like others have mentioned, the screen does not register you touch or swipes sometimes. That doesn’t bother me, but some might find it annoying.
The battery is okay. Coming from a ZTE Zmax that had a battery of 3400mAh and used to last me almost a whole full day of use (heavy usage and lasted about 17 hours), the BLU life one X is somewhat a letdown (for me anyways). Yes I know the battery on this phone is 2900 mAh, but the most it had lasted me, with heavy usage from 100% to almost dying, was about 8 hours. Yeah that is pretty good for others, but for me, not really. I guess I just have to get used to it. However, sometimes when I am not even using it, the battery drops quickly. I always make sure to close all apps, clear cache, and what not. I feel like I am constantly charging this phone. My old phone only had to be charged every other day. I do the same things on this phone that I did on my old phone.
The call quality is decent. I am able to hear the other person, not super clear, but it is fine. One thing though, off topic here, but when you are talking to someone and you have the phone pressed to your face, the screen turns on sometimes. This causes you to press random buttons with your face.
I honestly expected the speaker to be horrible, like some reviews have mentioned. It is not terrible, but it is not good either. It is not the loudest, but I think you can still hear things with no problem. I installed an app called Speaker Boost that makes the volume a lot louder. It really makes a difference, but the sounds sometimes sounds distorted if too loud.
I have a love/hate relationship with the cameras on this phone. I have uploaded pictures for this review that show how the pictures it takes look like. Also, some comparisons between this and my ZTE ZMAX.
-What I love:
The 13 mp camera takes great pictures in the daylight. The front facing camera takes better pictures than my old phone (8mp camera). The LED flash makes front facing pictures look better. I adore that it has a front flash.
-What I hate:
The main camera does not focus. Apparently it has Phase Detection Autofocus, but not on my camera. If you get close to something and want to focus, it will not focus at all. Also, pictures come out blurry and multiple attempts at taking a picture have to be done. In low light, pictures aren’t that great. The front facing camera adds a soft effect, making pictures look bad. I have tried everything to fix that, but the only remedy is using the LED Flash to add more sharpness to the picture.
Comparing BLU’s camera to my ZTE ZMAX, there were times when the ZTE did a better job than the BLU. Now, both phones cost about the same. I am not sure if anyone else has problems with the camera, but maybe mine is defective? I guess I shouldn’t complain for $150, but it is sad that an 8mp camera is just as good as Blu’s 13mp.
Overall, I think this is a great phone for anyone on a budget. If you don’t care too much for the camera and if you aren’t a heavy user, then this is a great phone to get. It gets the job done and it is a beautiful phone. I will keep on using it and hopefully things get better with future updates (if they ever release updates). For the price, it is well worth it.
Update for 12/19/2015 There have been no more issues with any of the keyboards I use lagging now that all apps have been set up. I restarted the phone last evening after the last app I wanted to install was put on and have been using the phone quite a bit since then and I have not had a repeat of the problem so far. I do find the default keyboard not to be that great looking but I understand it is quite popular in some circles. This phone is slow to charge up to full. It took over two hours and twenty minutes from about 36% down yesterday but with intense use it has held up nicely so far today. The screen is quite bright so turning it down if not in direct sunlight will also help the battery life. Because the phone is new I am using it more than usual so it will a few more days before I know what battery life will be for me. I still think this is the phone to get whether Blu ever updates it to Marshmallow or not. This is a lot of phone for a small price. I did not turn on encryption because it can slow down some phones. I will let someone else try that out and see how it works for them.
