Many of the great historical cultures had one sacred food which they relied on to ensure strong mind, body, and spirit: Fermented fish/fish liver oil. The Mighty Roman Soldier was given a daily ration of fermented fish oil. The Stoic Scandinavian Viking had a drum of fermenting cod livers outside the door of his home. Grandma always had a bottle of cod liver oil in the back cupboard. Nutrient assays, including vitamins A and D, for our fermented oils vary widely depending on methodology, lab and batch. Current science struggles to answer the questions we have on our sacred fermented foods. There are many naturally occurring metabolites and co-factors that make the issue of measuring natural nutrients difficult in the fermented oils. We do know that historical cultures liberally consumed these sacred foods to great benefit without today's standardization of knowledge.

“Cod liver oil greatly improves heart function to prevent heart disease and to treat it even in advanced stages, after a heart attack and after heart surgery. Cod liver oil alters the linings of the arteries in such a way as to improve healing after damage. This is attributed to the omega-3 fatty acids but vitamin A, D and K all have important roles to play in facilitating mineral absorption, improving muscle function and supporting elasticity of the blood vessels. The inflammation-reducing prostaglandins made from EPA help mediate the inflammatory response in the arteries. In other studies the heart-protective effect was associated with changes in the muscle response to serotonin, increasing the heart’s ability to “relax.” In a study with rats, treatment with cod liver oil actually caused artery-blocking atheromas to become smaller and blood vessel diameter to enlarge.55 Weston Price noted that heart attack deaths increased during periods when the vitamin A content of the diet was low. Cod liver oil can provide vitamin A on a continuous basis throughout the year.”
Cod liver oil contributes to bone health, preventing bone and muscle pain and joint pain.
Vitamin-rich cod liver oil has been shown to support the health of pregnant women by improving the fatty acid profile of their breast milk to optimize brain health in the infant.Read more ›
I know Amazon will not let me post an external link here, but if you search for "A Summary of Dr. Kaayla Daniel's New Report on Green Pasture's Fermented Cod Liver Oil and Butter Oil" by Ron Schmid, ND, you will find a summary of some of the key points. It is very disturbing.
For now, I will reduce my stars to one star because this information comes from a credible source, and because I believe that the product is rancid based on my experience with their butter oil (which I know to be rancid). If the report turns out to be false, then I will restore my 5-star rating.
Previous review title: Disgusting and expensive, but easier to swallow.
Before I bought this I tried Green Pasture's Fermented Cod Liver Oil/Butter Oil blend, in gel form. I have a really strong gag reflex and I just couldn't get it down.
I've read about the benefits of FCLO and Butter Oil, though, and I really wanted to be taking them, so I went ahead and ordered a bottle of orange flavor capsules, a bottle of unflavored capsules, and a bottle of butter oil capsules.Read more ›
My recent order contained capsules that had strong fishy smell, which made me gag when I took them and my fingers were smelly afterwards. This had never happened before, therefore I started doing some research. The reason I buy capsules is to avoid the smell. My research took me back to the Green Pastures website and there I found that their pricing structure had never changed. In fact, they offer special discount if you buy 6 or more bottles of their products at the same time.
The difference in price is 40-50%. I would rather buy directly from the manufacturer, who are eager to help, have tons of helpful information at their website, and who can address issues if I have some. It seems to me that those selling at Amazon are buying in bulk from Green Pastures and reselling it here...and making quite a profit out of it, while not responsible for the content of the product. I would recommend buying directly from the manufacturer. Amazon should consider using more stringent price control so that its loyal customers do not get ripped off.
