I am a huge KO-S fan, I think he is crazy talented and he seems like a very cool guy. Live, he is absolutely wonderful as well. This album is not his best work, at times I do not even think it is good work. Many of the songs are cheap sounding and dare I say, 'sell out-ish'. I sensed this coming on since he released YES! which was good but also too 'American Mainstream' for me. This album sounds like an attempt to sell records, it does not have the passion or fire that Exit, Joyful or Atlantis do. Black is a let down on many levels, Blonde is a better record but is mostly 'rock'.
I know he worked hard on this record but I am just not feeling it as much as I felt his other work.

The master of ceremonies K-os does it again, refusing to conform to a particular genre but staying true to himself as an artist in the process. Hip-hop, reggae, rap, r&b, neo rock...it's all here but K-os (knowledge of self) definitely goes back to his roots with the black album (disc one) which is mostly a soulful and gritty composition of his lyrical skills that made him known. He uses his beautiful singing voice sparingly (on the first disc) which he grew the courage to flex later in his career. On the first disc he is the epitome of what pure hip-hop is. The "black disc" might be his most commercial mix of songs to date but that isn't an insult by any means because there are still many different influences and creative beats present. His clean, well thought lyrics and positivity show how deep and talented he is through both discs. The blonde album is more of a mesh of what K-os has become as an artist who dabbles in whatever genre he wants and can get away with it. I have met him in person, he is articulate, very intelligent and not condoned to conform to what could make him popular in today's very drab, auto-tuned and thoughtless "popular" music scene. He stays true to himself as a brilliant artist and he shows it again and again. I begged him to not stop making music, it's in his blood and he has much more than he knows to give. My only complaint is that I wish the songs "Billy Bragg Winners (feat. Jay Malinowski)" and "Put Down Your Phone!" on the blonde disc were longer. There were a few snippits he released on his facebook page that aren't present and hopefully released later.

I listened to this album once all the way through before buying it, but I enjoyed it so much I just had to give the man my support buy picking up a copy from Amazon. Even if you aren't a big fan of hip hop, there's something for everyone to enjoy on this album. K-OS obviously put a lot of time into making this album one of high quality--from the beats to the features to the lyrics--and it has made for a different experience with each listen (on my fourth now).

Black On Blonde has dramatically increased the respect I have for K-OS as an artist and should serve as a model for other rappers to aspire to in terms of advancing the hip hop genre. I would happily recommend this album to anyone who is already a fan of or is interested in getting into hip hop.

This album continues the elaborate production of Yes!, with k-os embracing his rock side in the "Blonde" second disc. You might find it rather poppy, but lyrically he's as great as ever, rapping over some head-nodding beats. There's some good guest appearances as well.

I recommend this to any k-os fan or someone who wants to hear a different take on hip-hop.

Kheaven returns with some of his best work to date. I'd give the album a 6 if I could. Buy this record. Share it with your friends. See him live. Support good music!
