If you want a book on BMW Art Cars - you don't have much choice really. There was 2010 Special Edition of 'BMW Classic live' and another booklet that I thought I had but cannot find at the moment... This current book is the first "real" book in almost 40 years to cover the subject. The photographs and quality of the book draw no criticism. Paper is thick, no gloss, the colors are vivid. Printed in Germany. We get multiple shots of each car, including two photos of M3 GT2 on the cliff in Norway.
What I don't like:
- Each car's essay is written by a different author, so the book reads like a collection of articles rather than as a whole coherent story. It seems that the book was written in German and then translated into English; the language at times is not quite smooth.
- Although most important technical data is included, there is practically no discussion of technology in the cars. For example, 1975 3.0 CSL is quoted to have 430 bhp horsepower and 270 km/h top speed; next year's 3.0 CSL with turbocharger - 750 bhp and 340 km/h. I'd like to know more about these two cars and such amazing difference in performance achieved in one year.
- At least in one place there is a gross production oversight: 'The Racetrack as Art Happening' section is not complete: page 37 ends mid-sentence: "Those are the big three, and I find it as fitting as it is wonderful to", and then on page 38 the next section begins. I assume what happened is English version somehow took more space on the page, and the end of the sentence simply did not fit. How could this slip past proof-reading and quality control?..
Again, this is the only book on BMW Art Cars now. There may be more next year to celebrate 40th anniversary of the first car. This is a delightful coffee table book, with some readable though not perfect text.
