The Air-O-Swiss 7135 includes a demineralization cartridge which, perhaps naively, I assumed would prevent minerals from being thrown into the air. Unfortunately this unit is either underpowered or ineffective, and resulted in mineral dust pretty much everywhere in the room where it was used. Worse yet, the mineral dust appears to have bonded with my granite counters and my wood floors, and is extremely difficult to remove so far. The dust also clogged my air filters, producing an annoying whistling noise whenever my furnace kicked in.
Finally, the mineral content in the air was high enough that my stove fires burned orange rather than blue. Initially we thought our stove's oxygen mixture was off, perhaps also resulting in carbon monoxide being deposited into our home, as well. When we figured out that this was a result of the humidifier, we couldn't really justify keeping the unit.
I use this in my bedroom which is about 400 sq feet, I turn the ceiling fan on low (fan direction is sucking up from center), the humidifier is placed on a dresser about 42" high. Setting it to 40% and low mist output with the heater on. I turn the unit on about an hour before I go to bed to help get the room prepared and leave it running throughout the night, the ceiling fan helps disperse the humidity throughout the room.
I get two to three nights out of a full tank.
The thing is nice and quiet as expected with ultrasonic technology, you can barely hear the fan running and when the mist kicks in you hear a little buzz (very minor).
You are able to change the settings based on your need which is great.
So far I have not noticed any white dust, we have well water with a big whole house filter, then a water softener, and lastly a filter unit at the sink which I use to fill the tank. The manual states not to use water from a water softener but I am not planning on buying 3 or 4 gallons of distiller water every week. So far I have not noticed any side effects from the softened water.
If there were anything I could change on this unit it would be the following:
1) I would love to have some sort of an extension wand to get the vapor a little higher up in the room.
2) ....and this is something others have mentioned, I would redesign the tank so it can be filled from the top.
While it is not the dramatic end of the world as some other people would have you believe, it is also not ideal. Because the top is contoured you cannot set it upside down without somehow stabilizing it while filling. The cap that you need to unscrew is surrounded by a little flange. This is not a problem if you do not have arthritic complications, but if you do then there might be a bit of a struggle. I have added some pictures to illustrate this, hopefully they show up.....you can see how it could be tricky to wrap your hand around the cap.
All in all this is a great unit and I love how it has improved my sleep, nothing is perfect and the issue with filling the tank I can live with.
— DESIGN —
Obviously, the design sold me. It has a very beautiful shape. The top plastic water tank is the perfect frosted aqua blue color. It lets you see the water level so you know when it's time to refill. There are only seven buttons on the bottom that are pretty self-explanatory and controls all your settings
The water tank has a little white piece at the top that helps give off a fine mist. It can be taken off and cleaned. The water tank is also easy to unscrew when you need to refill it. The handle on the tank is well-made and it has held together for years.
— CLEANING —
Cleaning, ugh, this is where I take off a star. Cleaning this thing is not very fun. I usually give the water container and the base a nice citric acid soak overnight, then another night of some hydrogen peroxide, then I use the descaler made for this machine. In addition, I have to wipe it down everywhere when it gets dirty. It's a multi-day process for me because I like things to be clean. I don't do the full three-stage process often, but when I do, it's a chore. This maintenance is key if you don't want your humidifier just spewing out water with bacteria in it.
— SILVER STICK —
This originally came with a stick of silver that was to be placed in the base to inhibit bacteria from forming. Years later, all they give you are carbon bubble things. It's the same stuff you use to purify tap water for your water jug.
— HUMIDITY METER —
I think the humidity meter is on the lower end. Whatever the reading says, the humidity is most likely higher than that. I suggest you get an AcuRite Indoor Humidity Monitor, so you have two readings and can take an average of the two. Optimal humidity should range from 45-55% at all times, 40-60% is stretching it.
If your humidity is low in the winter, you will most likely end up having dry, cracked, bleeding skin. You don't want that. Keep hydrated by drinking water, and keep the air humid by constantly running this during the winters.
— SUMMARY —
This is now one of two humidifiers I own. If you have the money, the Dyson AM10 Humidifier, Iron/Blue gives off very clean mist because of its anti-bacteria technology. No matter what humidifier you get, make sure you have at least one, especially if you have cold, dry, winters. Recommended.
