WARNING! – Extreme graphic violence and explicit sexual content! There are some uncomfortable situations within this book but it makes this story an emotional and captivating read. Definitely worth reading.
Marcus Borden has a past that is full of crime, pain and loss. After leaving for four years he returns mysteriously rich and powerful. Now a crime boss with the power to do as he wants, he comes across a beautiful woman that he has briefly met years ago. After seeing her…He wants only her.
Emma Warne is “fiercely independent” woman who knows what it is like growing up with almost nothing. She has a past that has forced her to keep to herself. A sudden turn of events leads her to a dangerous encounter with the crime boss, Marcus Borden. She can’t seem to shake him and the more she pushes him away, the more he pursues.
Wow. Just wow. This book is so full of emotions and situations that will take your breath away. I don’t think I can fully express how intense of a ride this book took me on. I could NOT put it down. I was so captivated by all the details, the characters and the plot.
The main characters, Borden and Emma, are so well developed and well-rounded with their detailed back stories. Both of them come from a troubled past of poverty, drugs/alcohol and rough family situations. Their pasts have shaped them both into strong, determined and independent individuals. Borden is handsome and controlling yet has a sweet/soft side to him. Emma is beautiful and fierce. The interactions between these two are thrilling. I loved how Borden controlled Emma but loved even more how Emma would fight back. The fact that she didn’t easily give in to Borden and his requests allowed me to be okay with the dominant/controlling yet playful aspect of their relationship.
The secondary characters, Hawke and Graeme, are essential to the progression of the plot and they make great companions to Emma. Hawke is Borden’s secondhand man and “brotherly” friend. They don’t appear to be extremely close by the way they act and talk but you get the impression that they have been through a lot together. I loved Hawke’s interactions with Emma. I couldn’t help but to laugh and get flustered with her when Hawke would be irritating. Graeme doesn’t talk much or share many details of his life. He is very interesting though. I love that he wants to do a good job, protecting Emma, and that Emma’s and his relationship grows towards friendship.
The plot of this book is thrilling and fresh. Borden’s past and current criminal activity keeps the story moving and keeps the reader on edge…you never know what’s going to happen next.
R. J. Lewis’ writing/writing style is absolutely fantastic. Kate’s part in the beginning of the book is essential. It really sets up the plot and how Marcus becomes the man he is when he meets Emma. I still think about Kate’s part, it has stuck with me.
Overall, this book is an emotional ride that you have to take. It will make you think days after reading…
The story begins with Marcus and Kate, two young people in love from different sides of the tracks. Marcus has had a rather rough life while Kate has lived a very privileged life. He goes away to make himself better for her, returns for her only to have her stolen from him. He is then a dangerous man filled with vengeance, hate and nothing to lose-Mr.Borden is born. He exists in power this way until he meets Emma again. She's the girl from the wrong side of the tracks while he's now on the affluent side of town. Everyone fears him-even Emma- but they're drawn to each other and can't resist it. Emma makes him feel again. With feelings come a weakness he can't afford to have. Not after all that was stolen from him before. Will he risk it all, including Emma herself, or try to go back to just simply existing as a broken man?
I absolutely loved this beautiful, tumultuous, heartbreaking story. It is just part 1 of this story, so there is a cliffhanger which I normally hate. When it comes to anything written by R.J. Lewis tho you know it's going to be gold. I can't get enough of anything she writes and Borden does not disappoint at all. I can not wait for the next book in this series to come out.
Lewis starts out the book by giving you the idealized love that you think you want our broken hero to have. But, there are hints even then, that Kate doesn't really know him. She's what he thinks he wants, and he does love her. But she isn't what he needs.
His alley cat is the answer to his addictive personality. She's the mirroring jagged edge to his, and while he desperately believes for years that he should pay for Kate's fate with endless pain, Emma is his.
He makes mistakes with her several times. He's overbearing, demanding, stalkerish, and out of his damned mind, but as horrible as people may think he is... he isn't the enemy. To Kate's father, to the city, or to Emma.
I loved Emma just as much, and as much as she might be called a pushover, I don't see that, I see a strong woman learned all her and her lover's sharp edges. And I loved it.
The method of storytelling is interesting, part first person, part third... I loved this first part. And loved the second.
Marcus Borden is everything I love and hate in a bossy alpha, and reading the interactions between him and both Kate and Emma made me all kinds of weak in the knees. Good job R.J. Lewis at keeping my attention and now I've got several more books of yours on my TBR list.
***** 4.5 ***** "don't hold your breath for love" stars

Borden is the dark broody type, a little clichéd but I can forgive that when the female character is NOT prissy, naïve or stuck-up. He does what he says on the tin but my god he does it well! I think that we saw him from two perspectives at two different points in time as this did give him more depth.
Emma has some real gumption and the chemistry between the two is very convincing. You can read between the lines and see her conflict and whilst other authors try to replicate this 'love conflict' and fail Lewis does manage to pull this off.
I'm not one to cry over books but I did love Kate & I praise Lewis for making you fall in love with a character in the space of three pages.
Overall the writing was pretty good, which was a surprise since so many authors of this genre are self-published, which shows when they have limited capacity for writing a decent story, forgetting to add a plot and focus solely on the sex.
My only criticism is that it was not long enough!! I read it in less than 5hrs. I just hope the 2nd book lives up to the first without going down the route of 'happy families'.
If you are a fan of this author then you will not be disappointed with this story, there's no frills and I remember this with everything that's gone before, it seems to be a general pattern and style that's unique to R.J. Lewis and I really like it.!
I have to say I got quite invested with Kate and the way she captured Marcus's heart so when the story opened up to her being held captive I honestly didn't think that was going to be the end of her, I was waiting for someone to come to her rescue but I soon realised that wasn't going to be the case, so it was a bit of a shock to say the least.
Around the time Marcus met Kate he also met Emma but under very different circumstances and of course Emma had know idea at the time and wouldn't until a few years down the line.
I love how this story is told, two girls from two very different backgrounds have worked their magic on Marcus or Borden oh hang on its Marcus again.. It's brilliant.
I'm still wondering if Marcus really had Kate's Father killed and if Marcus will ever be able to have a happy and safe relationship, he deserves it, despite his reputation you've got to love him.!
I hope I'm about to find out in Borden 2
I loved this first instalment and before I had finished the first chapter I knew I would need to line up Book 2 straightaway!
Borden is a beast of a man.....very bad and incredibly sexy! He is from the wrong side of the tracks and involved in shady dealings meaning he has enemies in the underworld. We are given a taster of his early life and how his first girlfriend Kate was murdered as a result. This leaves Borden broken and he moves forward by cutting off his emotions and had no interest in the opposite sex until Emma comes into his life.
She is a tough little cookie who piques his interest and when they relationship turns physical.... boy is it intense! The author's writing was brilliant and although there is a fair amount of violence and some uncomfortable scenes, I loved it all!
Book 2 did not disappoint!
