If you have prior knowledge like working with FL studio and many of the plugins etc this unit puts a lot of cool options at your fingertips for a more hands on approach to tweaking and modifying your sounds. I read up on it before purchasing to make sure it's what I wanted in my arsenal of fun gadgets and it stands up to it's name. I already blew an afternoon away dabbling over my setup and am sure to drop in many more hours just playing around. Awesome product!

Version 2.0 Firmware Update (June 2016) Enables Complete Foot Control via MIDI (Shut Up and Take My Money!)

Prospective buyers should know the RC-505 is no longer just a tabletop looper for finger-tapping beatboxers, keyboard players, and DJs. With the new major firmware update in June 2016, guitar players can now use a MIDI foot controller to operate directly on each of the five tracks. It is no longer necessary to drill through the menus and designate one of the five tracks as a target for foot control via MIDI. You can now control any or all tracks directly. The number of assigns per phrase memory has increased from 8 to 16 to support the new ‘per track’ and other control capabilities and the following NEW track-related functions are now available for direct control via MIDI CC in messages: REC/PLAY for tracks 1 through 5, PLAY/STOP for tracks 1 through 5, CLEAR for tracks 1 through 5, UNDO/REDO for tracks 1 through 5, PLAY LEVEL for tracks 1 through 5, and PAN for tracks 1 through 5. Other NEW functions controllable by incoming MIDI CC’s include ALL CLEAR, RHYTHM LEVEL, RHYTHM PATTERN, MEMORY LEVEL, MASTER COMP, MASTER REVERB, OVERDUB MODE, INPUT FX A-C CTL, TRACK FX A-C CTL, INPUT FX A-C INC/DEC, TRACK FX A-C INC/DEC. TARGET TRACK INC/DEC. See the version 2 user manual supplement at the BOSS site for a complete description of all of the new features.

In conjunction with a flexible MIDI foot controller such as the Yamaha MFC-10 which has the ability to send out up to 5 CC messages on a single pedal press, the ability to plug in 4 additional expression pedals besides the built-in expression pedal, and of course the ability to send Program Change Messages, I can’t envision any floor-based control scenario of individual looper tracks that you couldn’t implement thanks to the new RC-505 V2.0 firmware update. I sold my RC-300 quite some time ago and when I read about the RC-505 I was disappointed to read about the crippled floor-based MIDI control capability upon its release with V1.x firmware. However, the V2.0 firmware fully resolves that problem, so I just pulled the trigger on an RC-505 purchase and thought I'd share news of the update via this Amazon review.

If BOSS was smart, they would go to considerable effort to publicize this firmware update because with it applied there is nothing in the market to beat this looper for guitarists either for live looping or to serve up multi-track backing tracks: 5 Tracks, hours of storage, comprehensive floor-based per track control via MIDI that enables expression pedal-based fade in and out of one or more tracks, and relatively compact and light. Some might complain it is not very rugged, but now it doesn’t need to be. The only thing you’ll be stepping on is your MIDI foot controller to remote control the RC-505. With the firmware update, this pedal is EXACTLY the product I wanted the RC-300 to be. Thank you, BOSS, for paying attention to the market reception of your product and giving us what we said was missing. I hope sales of the RC-505 go through the roof to encourage you to respond to criticism of your other products in a similarly productive way. You have made me very happy indeed with this firmware update!

Guitar friendly despite the reviews

The Boss RC-505 loop station is incredible! The first day I got it I was extremely impressed with the attention to detail. The knobs and faders are smooth, there's a simple interface for ease of use, and system edits allow for a vast amount of options to customize your pedal. I am a guitar player, but often I have all my pedals at "arms length" to adjust levels etc. With this product, if you time it right, you can press the triggers with your hand and have time to play the desired loop with the guitar, mic, drums, etc. A lot of reviews discourage this pedal from being used by guitarist, and push the RC-300. However, the RC-300 only has 3 tracks, and an expression pedal. Willing to forfeit the expression pedal for two extra tracks worked out great, and I feel the interface is much easier to use. Despite the reviews I have seen, the "play/record" buttons on the pedal are easily triggered by your foot (don't have to stomp it) and the tweaking of the levels and knobs is no different than those you would have to bend down to change anyway if it was a standard guitar pedal. Don't be discouraged to use it if you are guitar player, and want to add a powerful loop station to your collection. It has opened up my sound to new endeavors, and given me hours of better quality practice time with my instrument.
