More Sounds, More VersatilityThe stage-class Katana MkII lineup picks up where the first generation left off, building on the same core tones and features that have made the series such a worldwide smash. If you loved the original Katana amps, you'll love Katana MkII even more. And if you're new to the party, get ready for sound, feel, and versatility that soars far beyond its class. |
Five Amp Characters, Ten Overall TonesKatana MkII's five primary amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds, plus a dedicated voice optimized for acoustic-electric guitar. The characters have now been extended with newly voiced variations, providing a wider palette of tone options to craft your personal sound. |
Five Effects At OnceKatana MkII now includes five simultaneous effects categories, putting the tone-shaping power of a massive pedalboard right inside your amp. Independent Booster, Mod, FX, Delay, and Reverb sections come loaded from the factory with three variations in each, providing 15 ready-to-play effects to choose from. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio lets you dive much deeper if you want—customize the sections with over 60 different effect types, change the order with four different chains, and much more. |
Full-Throttle Sound Every Time You Plug InBacked by BOSS's Tube Logic approach, Katana MkII delivers the authentic output distortion characteristics of genuine tube amplifiers, with the sound and feel becoming richer and more responsive as you turn up the volume. But unlike that classic tube amp, Katana MkII's variable Power Control makes it easy to fly in the sweet spot without getting fired from the gig or kicked out of the house. Just throttle back the overall volume as needed to enjoy inspiring, cranked-amp sound anywhere you play, from bedroom to stage. |

Amplify Your External GearThe Katana-50 MkII rocks as a standalone amp, but it also excels as a powered cabinet for a favorite preamp, modeler, or multi-effects unit. Connecting to the rear-panel Power Amp In jack bypasses Katana MkII's preamp and effects, letting you tap straight into the Tube Logic power section, complete with grab-and-go Power Control. And with BOSS Tone Studio, the input can be easily optimized for your particular gear with a high-pass filter and adjustable gain. |
One-Touch Recall Of Custom SetupsOne of the Katana-50 MkII's most powerful features is the ability to store favorite amp character and effects setups in Tone Setting memories for instant recall. After you've dialed in a sound with the panel controls, simply save it to the desired memory with a quick button hold. Four Tone Settings (two banks of two) are available, with fast selection right from the panel. It's also possible to connect external footswitches for hands-free control on the gig. |
Ready-To-Mix Direct TonesThe Katana-50 MkII features USB and phones/recording outputs with mic'd cabinet emulation, letting you send mix-ready amp tones to a computer DAW or headphones. The direct sound can be shaped with three different Air Feel settings, which are accessible from BOSS Tone Studio. Two-channel USB operation is supported, allowing you to track in true stereo with many of Katana's modulation, EQ, delay, and reverb effects. |
BOSS Tone Studio EnhancementsBOSS Tone Studio has also evolved alongside the Katana MkII amplifiers. The interface has been updated with a refreshed look, and a number of parameters have been consolidated into the main screen for faster workflow. There's also a dedicated Pedal FX category, making it easier to assign wah and pedal bend effects to a connected expression pedal. And if you're a first-gen Katana owner, it's possible to import your custom patches and use them all with Katana MkII. |

Now, about the amp. For starters, anything over 5 watts is way to loud for BR playing. In fact, my little 1-watt Blackstar HT-1R is too loud, but I can at least turn it up enough to where it doesn't disturb my wife and still get good tones out of it. The Katana, with it's .5 watt setting and master volume allows me to dial in any type of tone, from ultra-clean to metal, without disturbing the peace.
The Katana also has a very good EQ and great onboard effects. I have a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, and the onboard Blues Drive overdrive effect sounds every bit a as good. Modulation, delay and reverb are also excellent as well. And why is that? Well, what would you expect from a company that makes some of the very best effects in the world, and has done so for many, many years.
I highly recommend this amp for any BR player or new guitarist who is looking for their first amp. There are a lot of pros that use the amp as well, whether it's for practice or a gig.
Anyway, so the knobs and features and lights, etc. a bit much for just starting out. Then, they mention the "tone studio" or whatever; so first, there's not really an iPad/iPhone app for it, it's purely a desktop application (like it's 1999) and additionally, you have to directly connect/plug-in the amp with a USB to your computer. After you've done all that prep work, then you're met with a very sub-par U/X (user experience) application. It's bland, MS-DOS'y and weak UI for a modern world. Once you get passed the "meh" software, you're left with drop-downs and menus and switches and lights, followed by dials and levels and gradients, etc. for the however many dozens or hundreds of combinations of foot pedals that exist out there. Again, very cool, IF you're all about this and know your stuff concerning pedals and tones, as well as creating patches and getting this sub-par software to work for you.
Where I'm at, is, very novice/newbie, who likes a good tone and solid design/engineering. The sounds definitely sounded like a speaker trying to emulate the sounds of what a real tube amplifier would sound like, which is normal for modelling amp, I guess, and the complexity/depth of all the features is too much and too tempting to not play with them for a newbie. Couldn't get quite heavy enough of a metal tone, regardless of what I did; maybe if I spent hours or days twiddling and customizing, I might get that sound, but I have no interest in that. I also don't care or have any interest in "gigging" - just want to play in the apt. and get some tones that I like, quickly.
I have a Marshall DSL that is just far superior for what I was looking for and it's super easy to use. Incredible tone, tube feel/sound that is authentic, and I can push that sound at a very low volume with its attenuator, as well. I'll be checking out Orange next, since Blackstar also did not quite get me there.
Worst case, you can use the headphone out -- however, if you're going to be limited strictly to headphone, there might be just-as-good solutions available for less money (I had a Mooer GE-100 multi-effect pedal for $89 that was a great headphone platform).
The main limitation on the 50-watt combo is the lack of an effects loop. If that matters to you (like having all time-based effects come after the pre-amp section), then you should consider getting the KT 100 for its effects loop.
For great information about the Katana 50 mkii, its built-in effects and Tone Studio software, check out the Studio Rats youtube channel. Since about December 2019, Phil has been producing short, lightning-fast rundowns of different sections, including some deeper dives (but still short) on specific features. It's especially helpful because he explains how a single control (for example "DIrect Mix") can have intuitively different results for different features. I'm not affiliated in any way, but he's legit creating a video-based owner's manual for the Katanas.

Worth getting the cable to link to your phone (and one of the relevant apps), to enable you to use set-ups that other people have used.

I use a 93 strat american ultra, lace pickups. 2016 Gibson les paul traditional, hand wired, p90 and dual bucker. Cort acoustic with corts in house piezoelectric pickup and eq. With my fender I get the raunchy tex style blues chunk, the prolific tone and sustain of the pink floyd magic and the dirty nasty crunch and distortion the likes of Bad Religion Pennywise and the such. With the les paul I get the rich blues tone of led zeppelin and BB King, the insane overdrive of slayer and pantera and the crazy awesome sounds of all the effects drivers.
I'm crazy, like CRAZY impressed with the acoustic setting, you'd have to spend upwards of $600 to get this clean of an acoustic amp, and to be able to add the incredible effects is just a pleasure.
The librarian editor lets you really get into adjusting settings. Even let's you choose the signal path. It's especially useful when you also use pedals in the signal path and fx loop. There are more cabs and effects to choose from in the editor. Remember that whatever you set in librarian, so your volume mid bass treble, all those settings, when you select that channel whatever the dials are set to is irrelevant until you start manually adjusting them, so remember that for setting the volume, the master volume is unaffected and remains constant. There are also a few places that you can download patches, just google katana patches and browse through. Don't forget to get yourself a usb cable as it doesn't come with one.
The built in attenuator makes this very friendly for apartments. The headphone Jack is also your friend just make sure you have the 1/8th inch plug or adapter.
So at the end, buy this! You definitely will not regret it. Forgot to mention, this sucker gets LOUD!!

Do not let the smaller size fool you as it is very powerful and loud enough to play a small gig. I have never had the volume higher than 11 and that is as loud as I dared.
I did hours and hours of research on line before I pulled the trigger on this amp. Originally I was hell bent on buying a Tube amp. Well the one that I was looking at buying only had one channel and I wanted a 2 channel amp for more versatility.
After seeing many YouTube videos on this amp with an expert saying that it is difficult for him to tell the difference between this amp or a tube amp made me get off the Tube amp train.
The fact that this amp not only has one channel but 4 channels was for me the final selling point along with the great sound. With the foot switch that I bought I can easily switch to any of the 4 channels in a heartbeat and as such no need to buy a lot of guitar pedals to get various effects.
One can set the Wattage to 50, 25 or even a 0.05 Watt and even at that low setting there is still lots of Volume.
Fun Fact
Something you may never read or see but this amp uses 8.5 Watts of power and that is whether it is on the 50 Watt or 0.05 Watt setting. So this amp is easy on your Hydro bill. My hair dryer for example uses 1365 Watts.
The amp comes with many built in sound effects. If you download for free the Boss Tone Studio software one will almost have an endless amount of effects as each one can be tweaked and then saved as a patch for future use or saved direct to the amp.
One can also buy patches crated by others that have a special sound that you may like, Also lots of free patches. For more info on how to use the software and even the Amp, check YouTube as many good videos on there.
For the price this amplifier sure is hard to beat and made in Japan is a plus as we know that Japanese Products are top quality whether it is cars, snow blowers, small engines etc. Huge difference between made in China or made in Japan . The shipping was also fast.
If you are looking for a great amp with a super price tag, you have just found it.
