I use the SD-1 primarily for worship music in our church's band and have it going into the front of a clean amp (a Tech 21 Blonde). With this pedal/amp configuration I can dial in thick, warm overdrive, or a more transparent, delicate clean sound with a little bite.
Your pickups will play a huge role in the sound you get from this pedal. The Kiesel Lithium pickups in my Aries produce a thick, raging overdrive that cleans up ok with the guitar's volume knob. This allows me to significantly change my tone depending on my picking attack, as I can get light, pretty singles notes/chords when picking softly, and full on roaring chords during a chorus. A hot humbucker will drive this pedal into full overdrive quickly, even with the gain on low.
Single coils will respond much differently, producing a cleaner, transparent overdrive in the low to mid gain setting. Turning the gain up higher will of course add to the dynamic response of your picking and allow you to clean it up with your volume knob much more so than with humbuckers.
