I use the SD-1 primarily for worship music in our church's band and have it going into the front of a clean amp (a Tech 21 Blonde). With this pedal/amp configuration I can dial in thick, warm overdrive, or a more transparent, delicate clean sound with a little bite.
Your pickups will play a huge role in the sound you get from this pedal. The Kiesel Lithium pickups in my Aries produce a thick, raging overdrive that cleans up ok with the guitar's volume knob. This allows me to significantly change my tone depending on my picking attack, as I can get light, pretty singles notes/chords when picking softly, and full on roaring chords during a chorus. A hot humbucker will drive this pedal into full overdrive quickly, even with the gain on low.
Single coils will respond much differently, producing a cleaner, transparent overdrive in the low to mid gain setting. Turning the gain up higher will of course add to the dynamic response of your picking and allow you to clean it up with your volume knob much more so than with humbuckers.
I bought a Donner TubeDrive for 20 bucks on ebay…. and I was blown away at how good it sounded.
I bought this SD-1 really wanting a deep feeling OD, and it didn't cut it for me. I'm playing a American Special strat into a Fender Super Champ.
Pros: the breakup dynamics are great, it really responds to your picking dynamics, really feels and sounds like an overdriven clean channel. Solid construction. It's a very clear pedal, in that your guitar really comes through, and doesn't add a lot of color.
Cons: In my strat to Fender amp rig, it sounds a little too bright. The pedal is alsmost too transparent, but does accent mids noticeably. I can't really get much out of the tone control. Using it as a boost, I have to really turn the tone knob down to roll off the brightness. I was hoping/looking for something that also gave me a little more bottom end. I'm sure this stomp box works better in a different setup.
Compared to my Donner Tube Drive (which I now like more after shooting them out), the Donner just has a broader range of tonal control and gain control. I can get more bottom end out of it, and it just adds a lot more depth in my setup. The breakup characteristics are not as organic feeling as the SD-1, for sure.
stacked with a distortion n some effects with the drive down and tone around noon. I wasn't looking for a crazy OD pedal, just one to give that extra little something to my tone. Mix it around in your pedal chain to find the best result. I've tried it on clean channels by themselves, mixed with pedals and also on OD channels. I can tell this is gonna be an always on pedal like my TC Electronic Forcefield Compressor. The SD-1 with the compressor, DOD Gunslinger or Fuzz box. Damn, I love it. Works pretty well overall with any setup I tried. Again doesn't color tone too much. Can't beat BOSS
