Initially, Janda takes a purely mercenary attitude to the job. The reward money is high enough that it promises her financial freedom from all ties to start a new life. However, the Hotel has other ideas... Though a shape shifter with some magic of her own, once Janda is inside the Hotel, things become complicated. The grandeur and elegance of the place raises her old insecurities about not being good enough. Black is not black and white not white. Her normal biker's clothing has been whisked away for cleaning and instead she is left with a wardrobe of dresses from which to select her evening attire. Janda NEVER wears dresses but finds herself forced to don a revealing frock to go downstairs for dinner, leaving her rattled and slightly unsettled. Nonetheless, she heads to the restaurant, determined to stalk her prey. Hesitating before entering the more formal dining area, she meets an elderly, distinguished gentleman, Sebastian, who invites her to join him.
Sebastian ends up playing a key role in the story, but once Janda finally meets the elusive panther, she begins to question her convictions of his guilt. Add to that her growing attraction for Holden plus the byzantine dynamics of pack and clan politics, and Janda suddenly finds herself in very unfamiliar territory. Still, cynical and tough as she is, she has always had a good heart and as the suspense mounts, she uses that knowledge to successfully navigate some very treacherous waters.
This is an excellent read, full of suspense and action, though as in several of the other Hotel stories I've read, the book could have used more thorough editing--too many missing words here and there in key sentences. My other peeve: no use of the subjunctive in the "if" clauses. Otherwise, I highly recommend this story as a really good read.
The story moves along at a good pace and kept my attention the whole time. This was also my first foray into the "were" world and found it to be a world that I will be visiting again soon. I will definitely be reading more of this authors work.
Bounty Huntress by Sheri Queen is a novella in the Hotel Paranormal anthology that sets up the new Sleepy Hollow Hunters series and does a good job as such. Filled with intriguing characters and interesting locations, Bounty Huntress introduces us to Janda Gray, a Lykoi (half wolf, half werecat) shifter, who has been an outcast within her own pack for her entire life and is forced to make her own way in the world by earning her keep as a bounty hunter. She enjoys her job and is good at it, keeping to herself and keeping her eye on the prize—nabbing her target, the mysterious Alexander Holden--until she does the unthinkable and falls in love with her target. As an avid reader of romance, I would have liked to have seen a bit more build-up of the romance and sexual tension in this book (as it is billed as a Paranormal Romance, where the romantic relationship is key to the story itself). For me the romance between the hero and heroine started rather late in the story and seemed rather forced and abrupt in that the characters were strangers/enemies one second then suddenly in the next chapter he’s the man she’s enamored with and can’t live without. Overall, however, the story flowed well, was fast paced, and an enjoyable, quick read. I loved the characters of Muther and Sebastian, the vampire, and hope they too might get their own stories someday as well. I look forward to future installments of this fascinating new series by debut author, Sheri Queen.
I found twist, turns, secrets, heat, and a pace that kept my pages turning. Janda and Alex may have been the first to kick start this series, but there are many others with a story to tell. Come get in on the beginning of the ride and see where it takes you.
