The BRK hardwire smoke alarm with photoelectric sensor is designed to reduce common "nuisance" alarms. It's an excellent choice for installations in or near kitchens, near fireplaces, or in hallways directly outside bathrooms, utility rooms, or other areas prone to steam. This alarm is also a popular choice for hotel/motel applications.

The 7010B AC-powered smoke alarm with photoelectric sensor includes these features:

  • Photoelectric sensor which is more effective at detecting smoldering fires which smolder for hours before bursting into flame.
  • 120-volt VAC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
  • Quick plug-in power connector for easy installation.
  • 9-volt battery backup for peace of mind during power malfunction.
  • Alarm indication which in an interconnected system, automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
  • Optipath 360 technology allows 360-degree access to the layer of air on the ceiling or wall that carries the fire signatures (smoke, combustion particles and volatile components).
  • Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
  • Locking feature for tamper resistance.
  • 10-year limited warranty.
All BRK Electronics smoke alarms meet UL 217 standard and are listed with the California State Fire Marshal. They use the new UL mandated repeating 85-decibel alarm horn pattern. 10-year limited warranty.--Bree Norlander

My house was built using the BRK 9120B smoke alarms. A few months after moving in, they would go off in the middle of the night for no apparent reason (there were no fires). Never during the day, of course - always when I was deep asleep. Contacted BRK customer Service and was told the 9120 was susceptible to power fluctuations and that the power companies were known to 'do things' in the midle of the night. To test I disconnected the electrical connection and ran on battery only for a year - no false alarms. I ordered the 7010B to replace them and so far so good. The replacement was very easy as the connection plug is the same. I did have to remove and replace the mounting ring but that was only two screws per unit, and even then you only had to loosen the screws.

I purchased several BRK 7010Bs to replace the 4120Bs and 9120Bs that came with my house when it was built. As I've read in many reviews, both the 4120B and the 9120B would "cry wolf" from cooking and in the middle of the night and randomly chirp. I had enough so I did a little bit of research on smoke alarms and sensing technologies.

I chose the 7010B because I liked what I saw with the photoelectric sensor. Photoelectric sensing technology senses smoke particles from smoldering fires whereas ionization detects combustion particles from fast flaming fires. It turns out that a vast majority of home fire deaths are from the smoke itself, not the fire. Also, most home fires begin as slow smoldering fires. Ionization detectors are almost completely incapable of sensing smoke from smoldering fires. It would only make sense to me that my smoke alarm could actually sense real fire smoke and not just my cooking.

The other reason I chose the 7010B was that it carries the same basic features as the 9120B such as the slide out battery compartment, the combined test/silence button, and the ease of installation.

Installation was very easy too. All I had to do was replace the trim ring as the plug was exactly the same. I can't imagine the wire harness being hard to replace either if you do your own home electrical work.

So I installed the alarms and that was that until it was time for the real thing (more or less). I had some pasta boil over on the stove and the burner caught on fire. It wasn't major, maybe 6 to 8 inch flames, but a fire nonetheless. I was in the kitchen when it all went down and saw the whole thing.

Decades of government, university and private research clearly indicate that photoelectric alarms significantly outperform ionization alarms in the fires most likely to kill you and your family. Ionization alarms nuisance trip when you cook and shower, but will take 15-90 minutes longer to alarm in a smoldering fire than a photoelectric alarm.

No matter how new your ionization alarms are - replace them with photo only alarms. The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is the largest firefighters union in the US and Canada with almost 300,000 members. The recommend only photoelectric alarms and specifically do not recommend combination alarms. Combination Photo/Ionization alarms suffer the same nuisance tripping issues as ion only alarms and they cost far more. There is no advantage with Combo alarms.

Almost 95% of US homes have ionization alarms. If we could wave a magic wand and change all the smoke alarms in the US to photoelectric alarms - our fire death rate would drop 40% overnight. Don't become the next statistic.

If you need to mount a fire/smoke detector in a hallway, near a bathroom, than this is the detector for you. I've had zero false alarms. The price was lower than most other detectors. It seems to be working well.

Updated - 1/5/09. The alarm is working working very well, and went off when I had left something on the stove. The alarm went off when the forgotten food on my stove was smoking badly, but before it caught fire. Still no false alarms.

I purchased the 7010B model because it was the photoelectric type and had the battery backup. I did a lot of research and it seemed to me that the photoelectric are better. I saw other people that had problems with low battery chirping right out of the box and was concerned, because that is what was driving me crazy with our old BRK alarms. However, our old alarms were over 10 years old. There is a lot of talk about replacing the batteries on a regular basis, but very little talk about actually replacing the alarm which should be done every 7 to 10 years. I purchased 7 alarms and only one started chirping shortly after being installed. I changed the battery and have not had any other problems. These alarms come with batteries already in them, so even though there is a plastic strip you have to remove to activate the battery, I guess some are not going to be 100%. The installation was very simple as we were already wired for the BRK alarms. It took less then 20 minutes to change out all 7 alarms. I would recommend the BRK or First Alert brand (same company), however, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Figure out what type of alarm will work best for your situation. There are 2 types of alarms, photoelectric and ionization. Also, make sure that whoever you order your alarm from tells you the manufacturer's date on the back of the alarm. They should be marked for the current year. Beware of cheaper alarms on ebay as many are outdated.
