It's a good love story, fraught with perilous events. And Jessica Subject proves how adept she is at alien world-building. I have to tell you, I sure don't want to meet one of the Erebus--villainous creatures crossing the universe killing anything and everything they come across.
There's plenty of action, and the descriptions keep the reader immersed in the tale.
When I finished this book, I immediately started reading book # 2 in the series.
Bryce is a Galactic Defender who roams the planets searching for creatures called the Erebus, nasty creatures who kill everything in their path. He re-meets his old love Lalia , after he had tracked the creatures to a planet called Terra (Earth).
Lalia vanished to earth during an attack on her home planet, pregnant with Bryce's daughter , Katrina. Bryce searched for years, never knowing about his daughter. When they re-meet what follows is a lot of adventure , interwoven with the two having to overcome past hurts while falling in love again. The characters in the story are strong , independent and tough, but you can clearly see that they truly care for each other.
I loved the characters of Bryce and Lalia, especially Lalia in her wanting to rule with a more modern approach when she does return to her home planet and has to rule as the new Queen.
The character that truly stuck an accord for me was their daughter Katrina though, I cant wait to find out more about her in the upcoming story of Jager.
(I also loved the little girl who is saved and adopted into the family, by Katrina and Lalia. Gwendolyn is funny but tough and she is hopefully part of the upcoming stories as well.)
A well-written start to a promising series, that keeps one interested and on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is happening next.
I was given a copy for an honest review.
I personally living thinking everyone I once loved was dead only to find out that some were alive would throw me into a state. Lalia handled a great part of the book truly as a woman whose lived apart from the royal affairs and I really liked her for a that, but she did have her moments where I swear I wanted to kick her butt to next week. I really hate when strong characters doubt themselves...urgh!
I mean the woman raised one heck of a daughter!! OMG!! Katrina!! HECK YEAH! Love her so much...Can't wait until she shows them that when a defender and a princess make a child .....you better watch it!!
As for our title character Bryce.....Hot defender...has personally made it so that I will NEVER look at a tree again like a NORMAL tree (thanks)
He's on a mission, finds his woman, his child, and now he's never been stronger....
This book overall is a sweet love story you only wished a man would bother himself to go through for you. A love that lasted even after the thought of death. Never deterring after finding each other and all that was missed.
The series has so much to promise us as readers and if the little dialogue between Katrina and Jager was anything at the end,,,,we're in for a heck of a second book!!!
I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ...my review is just an opinion, please READ THIS BOOK!!! LOVE A DEFENDER!!! and form your own opinion :)
Without that detail though, Bryce is a short feel good adventure and romance. Despite the fact that there are icky monsters. Make that gross, horrible monsters. The presence of the Erebus on Earth is what brings Bryce to this world to protect the inhabitants from those creatures. Lalia just happens to be living on Earth, and apparently, attracting Erebus. After thwarting the Erebus attack, Bryce recognizes the lost princess of Hemera and his former lover. Princess Lalia ends up bound for her former home on a ship with her daughter and the man she thought she would never see again, Bryce.
The exiled princess is unsure of her position on her home world and now she has a daughter to worry about. The daughter, who’s father was killed by the Erebus back on Earth, is headed for a completely foreign world and she too, is wondering what awaits her. Her presence in the story add a nice level of complexity to an otherwise straightforward story.
Bryce is the strong Defender of the Galactic Alliance, faithful and bound to follow orders, to do his duty. How can the princess and her defender possibly find a life together? The story is one of regrets for lost love and hope for a better future.
Do you want to see fated lovers overcome banishment, duty and icky monsters to enjoy a HEA in a short SciFi Romance. Then might I suggest Bryce?
