The guard covers your palms, but leaves your fingers free. This is a mixed bag, and probably up to personal preference. It keeps some of the dirt off your hands, but your fingers will still get dirty from use. (Can't just eat finger food after if you go out to eat.) Leaving the fingers uncovered does give you the benefit of having a better grip, though.
With daily use, the guard will quickly wear holes into the palms-- but only through one layer, leaving your hand still protected. I found them useful, and they aren't super expensive so I don't mind replacing them once or twice per year if I have to.
They are great at keeping my fore arms warm when I commute to work on my mountain bike.
I have a couple pairs of cheaper versions of these which are thinner but are stretchier and can go past the elbows and I still use them but these will also get used a lot.
Worth their price
