Great product by itself, even better if modified!

It feels solid and it is great quality considering the price. I didn't have trouble locking it into place on my Baofeng F8HP like other reviewers have said. Anyways one big flaw I found with most all ham radios is the ability to charge the battery. I bought a HAM radio for emergency preparedness and one thing I quickly saw is that all I have is a wall adapter to charge the original battery. If power went out for a long time and I had no gas in my car then I couldn't use my radio. I've modified most of my equipment to work with 18650 lithium-ion batteries. I have created a solar charger that can charge the 18650 cells so I can charge most of my equipment via solar when other methods are not available. So naturally I made an adapter for my radio so it can work off of 18650s. The original battery voltage is 7.4v and that is exactly what 2 18650 batteries provide, so all I had to do was solder on power connectors to the car adapter, radio adapter, and my new 18650 battery pack. So I can still plug it into my car if needed or use my 18650 battery pack to power my radio. See pictures for proof that it works! When I get survival gear I need to have it work in the middle of nowhere. Solar charging li-ion cells and modifying equipment to work with them is my solution.

ATTENTION: Reviewer, For Realz pointed out a design flaw in this battery box that could cause injury. There is good chance the battery pack can short out if the middle battery contact comes in contact with the radio contact. There is only a small air gap between them. I used a piece of credit card plastic to insulate them, It wedged in tight enough it won't come out, but to be sure, you can SuperGlue it in place. This will solve this hazardous problem. This does not change my rating, but this *is* something you need to know.

I am impressed! This is a quality piece of work. The plastic is high grade and thick enough to be plenty durable. It has a very solid feel, and is a perfect fit to my radio. With the batteries installed, you can't tell it form the 3800MAH battery. Battery performance will vary depending on the batteries you use, but with 3800 MAH NiMH batteries, It lasted far longer than the 3800MAH LiON battery I bought with the radio ever did. BTW, that is why I bought this battery box. The Baofeng 3800 MAH LiON battery I bought was thoroughly depleted after just 6 months of use. I figured I could do better with NiMH batteries. I highly recommend getting this instead of the standard 3800 MAH battery.By Dave H. on May 5, 2018

Update: Fire danger unless modified. The metal contact that runs in the center battery channel can loosen up on its own and touch one of the contacts that sends power to the radio, when this happens the metal gets red hot, the plastic starts melting, then I'm sure a fire follows but I had the case open when this happened and I just shook the batteries out very quickly to avoid further damage. I am still keeping this product at 4 stars since there are very few options to use AA batteries with a baofeng, it just needs a little modification. I used some high temperature RTV silicone sealant to keep the metal tab from coming out and contacting the metal above it. Its not perfect but it can no longer catch fire. You can see in the photo where the metal heated up where it is discolored on the right radio contact, and the silicone seal i used to keep the piece from touching it again.

Great product, but needs a little improvement

Great product, I like that they came with a dummy as unlike other ones. I ordered two of them, and they both could be pulled apart at the bottom were the press tab wasn't engaging correctly. A little sanding and the latches work nicely now.By Jason on September 24, 2014

Another gripe about this product is how loose the snap mechanism is securing clam shell design together. I can pull the two apart pretty easily without hitting the release button.
And also... please please please use the included dummy battery when using alkaline (1.5V) AA batteries!! If 6 alkalines are used, the radio will intentionally not work due to the higher total voltage being outside the operating range. Many people have given this product bad reviews because they didn't read.

As previous reviewers have stated, the top center battery terminal can easily come loose, touch another terminal and short out the pack. *I have not experienced this.* Although I have taken the precaution advised and glued the top center battery terminal in place so that it does not wiggle free. See photos. After this quick fix, it works safely and as expected. With 6x NiMH the battery life is considerably longer (2-3 times) than the 1100 mAhr Li-ion supplied with the Baofeng UV-5R.By Sean on May 28, 2016
