Plugged it in and waited for drivers to be installed by windows. no disk or downloads needed. no post config needed. just verified in system to make sure i know which port it got assigned.
I used it with CHIRP on my 888S Plus radios and UV-82HP. no issues. Just make sure the plug is all the way in or radio will not be recognized.
Operation is simple (using CHIRP).
1. Install CHIRP software (latest build .exe) from their website (linked from btech site url is in the included instruction sheet)
2. Plugin the cable and wait for windows to install drivers
3. Start CHIRP software from your start menu
4. Select 'Radio'->'download from radio'
5. In the open dialog window select your port, radio manufacturer and model number
6. You will see progress bar and when it is done there will be a new tab with your radio's config open
7. Save your original config just in case you need to go to it.
8. With your config tab selected go to 'Radio'->'import from stock config' and select which bad file you want to load
9. Pop-up window will open with list of bends and memory locations, use controls on pop-up window to modify list as you need and press OK. Take advantage of buttons under 'adjust new location', these will alter all addresses in the list for you. Press OK when done
10. Verify that your address list is what you want and go to 'radio'->'update to radio'
11. Answer whatever prompts you get and let it rip. You will see progress bar going. When it is done, your radio is ready to be used with updated channel list.

Before you upload to radio, you can also change settings, see there is a tab under 'memories memory range' label at top left corner.

I have several UV-5R radios that I want to program so they all have a common configuration. Some options on the radio (e.g. changing the startup message to show user-defined text, naming saved channel memories) are only possible when programming from a computer, while other options (like setting up channel memories, CTCSS/DCS squelch settings, power, etc.) are possible from the radio's keypad but are a huge pain to do.

This cable makes everything easy: it's plug-and-play on Windows 7, with the driver being installed automatically in a minute or two from Windows Update. It should work out-of-the-box on Mac and Linux systems as it uses a genuine FTDI chip (hence the higher cost compared to other similar cables). The cable is well-made with good strain relief on the various connections.

It shows up as a serial port, and the CHIRP software recognizes it right away. Communication with the radios was fast, straightforward, and completed without errors.

Worked Perfect to program my BaoFeng & Midland radios

Programmed 2 BaoFeng UV-5R and 4 BF-888S Walkie Talkies using CHIRP. Worked like a charm. Was also able to reprogram channels on some older Midland radios that we only use one channel on. Sometimes the channel selector would get bumped or moved while using them in the field & radio would be on the wrong frequency so just programmed all the channels the same frequency. These older radios don't have a way to lock them on the channel. Used desktop Windows computer running Windows 7 pro & had no problem. Drivers were automatically installed when I plugged the cable into the USB slot. Was able to see the port name & then marked the cable for the USB port used so it wouldn't accidentally get plugged into a different port later on. BaoFeng emailed me to make sure everything was OK with their product. Good customer service!

Tried to program my Baofeng UV-5R radios using this cable with CHIRP, and the software could not recognize either radio. Moreover, when I plugged the cable into my Mac, the red and green lights flashed briefly, but didn't stay lit. I have no idea if that's supposed to happen, if the cable is defective or if I have a bad connection, but it's a big FAIL!

The cable works fine. I've used it to program both my BaoFeng UV-82HPs a number of times. I didn't give it five stars for two reasons:
1. The add says you won't have to load drivers on Windows 7. Not true at all...Windows 7 doesn't have drivers for the chipset in this cable. So, I still had to download and install drivers. That's wasn't a problem for me, but it should have been pointed out in the description. I think it would have been more accurate to say that you'll never need drivers other than the authentic drivers for authentic FT chips! It is an authentic cable, though, so once I got the drivers loaded, it worked fine.

2. When you upload to, or download from, a UV-82HP, it's important to know that the position of the volume control affects this process. The instructions that appear when you click the selection to upload or download say that you may have to turn the volume up! I have two UV-82HPs. When I programmed the first of the two, I needed to turn the volume all the way up to upload or download. On the other one, if I turn the volume up that far, it won't work...it'll say it failed to connect to the phone. I spent at least 20 minutes trying to figure out why my second radio wouldn't connect with my computer until it dawned on me to try a lower volume setting. Nowhere does it say this...but it should. Anyway, if you read this, be aware that you may have to fiddle with the volume button to get it to upload. I usually start about 1/3 up, and then if it fails to connect, I turn it up a bit and try again until it starts.
