It is a nice radio and the Price is Right for a tri-band handheld, where as the brand name radios you would be paying $400. Or more for a handheld radio, no it don't have all the bell and whistles the brand names handheld radio have, But this radio has what I need.
All in all, I give this radio a A+, and I do plan on buying other radio from this company.
Update: took my radio to a friend who has all the test equipment that you can think of, first the radio dose not put out 5 watts as there ad clams, out side the ham bands it does put out 5 watts.
2m and 440 put out around 4.5 watts and on 220Mhz round 3.5 watts
I did upgrade to a tri-band antenna and a 3800 lipo battery.
Have a friend hat has a 220Mhz repeater that is 51 miles from me, with the upgrade antenna and battery can talk on his repeater, it was a little rough but we talked for an hour, and we are separated by large hills and mountains and I was down in a valley!
I just recently bought two more to make a cheap repeater out of them I am very satisfied with this radio!
When programming with the Chirp software I needed to select Btech instead of Baofeng. After that It worked perfectly. I found the keypad programming instructions on miklor.com a bit easier to use than those in the manual. Almost identical to my UV82
Programming them with CHIRP was a breeze. Loaded up the image files for the old UV-5Rs and the UV-82X and copied everything over to a copy of the original 3X image and uploaded to the radios with no issues. Wonderful :-). Manual programming isn't difficult either.
The accessories for the UV-5s also work without issue, including the 3800MAh batteries, just slid right into place. The 3800 mAH batteries also, IMO, give a nicer hand feel than the stock batteries.
Did get the tri-band antennas for them. Tall but the 3800mAH backs help and I don't have to drag two antennas around.
Great addition, you won't be disappointed :-).
Disclosure: Paid full boat retail (easy :-), not a given for review unit.
Downsides: At this time there is no way to program the PowerOn Message, Stun, Kill, or Revive options - not from the radio nor software. There is also no way to program any menu settings from software, only channel memory settings (which is the majority of the work, but it is still nice to see all the knobs on the PC in the software). "Coming soon" to a CHIRP version near you.
I have several of the original UV-5R radios and this UV-5X3 is an improvement in scanning and programming. I also purchased the UV-25X4 and it was great to see that I could use CHIRP to import my UV-5R channels into both the UV-5X3 and UV-25X4. Had to get a new programming cable for the UV-25X4, but it works great. The UV-5X3 and UV-25X4 are my way of getting into 220 MHz and I am enjoying the experience.
