My WHR-HP-G54 sat in the middle of a ~2000 sq. ft finished basement and provided full wireless strength to the entire basement and the entire ~2000 sq. ft main floor. I rarely had a bar missing on any wireless indicator. I have RoadRunner internet provided by Brighthouse (20 mb down / 2 mb up)and was always able to get 19 down / 1.9 up anywhere in the house. The WHR-HP-G54 also provided a solid internet connection to four wired devices in the basement. Needless to say, I loved this router and it never game me a problem in the many years I have had it.
I figured since it was a G only router and N wireless had been out for quite some time, a newer router would provide me with at least the same performance or better. I first tried the Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H since it was dual-band and I could separate my laptop and iMac from all the other wireless devices (5 GHz for laptop and iMac and 2.4 GHz for everything else). I was able to set up the two signals without much issue, but the wireless strength was sub-par. I was never able to get much more than a couple of bars on the main floor in the corner bedrooms. I tried re-positioning the antennae and tweaking the settings, but with the same results. Keep in mind, my WHR-HP-G54 was full strength, all the time, everywhere, stock settings. I then tried the Linksys 2500 and had the same problem, weak wireless signals on the main floor.
I began to think that the performance of my WHR-HP-G54 has something to do with its MIMO capability and built-in amplifier. With that in mind, I bought the WZR-HP-G450H because it touted a 3x3 MIMO antenna configuration with 5 dBi antennae. Finally, I had the wireless strength I was used to along with the DD-WRT I had been using with the WHR-HP-G54. This router is exactly what I was looking for: strong wireless signal, easy to set up (I am using the pre-loaded firmware), and 4 wired ports. I have only had the router a few days, but I have had no issues since setting it up. I will come back and update this review if something happens, but I am not anticipating any problems since my experience with Buffalo routers has been stellar.
If you are looking for long-range wireless, I highly recommend you try this router.
UPDATE (10-9-11)
I spoke a little too soon it seems. The wireless signal began dropping occasionally throughout the day. It may just be a setting or I may just need to switch to the included pro firmware. I really like the router, so I am going to keep it. I have switched back to my old router (with a busted port on the back) for now and when I get time I will finagle with the G450H to see if I can get a constant wireless signal.
DD-WRT seemed ok, but I noticed that the filesystem was not writeable, and you had to create a /jffs space and mount directories from it manually to override parts of the regular filesystem to do interesting stuff; some good instructions are here: howtogeek.com/98408/how-to-install-additional-software-on-your-router-dd-wrt/
That seemed rather restrictive to me, so I put openwrt (12.09-rc1 with squashfs from downloads.openwrt.org/attitude_adjustment/12.09-rc1/ar71xx/generic/) on this router, which allows me to easily modify files and left me with a whopping 30MB of free space (an order of magnitude more than the WNDR3700 did by the way) to install packages, so I installed tcpdump, iperf, igmpproxy, fdisk, sdparm, and some scripts that toggle wifi on and off on the router when I press the AOSS button, so I can easily turn it off at night.
This webpage was great help: wiki.openwrt.org/toh/buffalo/wzr-hp-g450h
since it explains the hoops you have to go through to install OpenWRT the first time on this router, ie set your IP address to 192.168.11.2 and a static arp entry for 192.168.11.1 to 02:aa:bb:cc:dd:23, and tftp the image during a 4-second window after boot... All this was harder to deal with than the WNDR3700, but not enough to warrant subtracting a star from my review.
The big antennas of the router seem to help it not only transmit, but also receive weak signals from remote clients. This is an often overlooked but crucial aspect of wifi, not only is it important to get a good signal from the router, but your laptop/tablet/device needs to be able to send good signals back to the router, and often these devices are weak, so having a sensitive router is very important and makes a big difference especially in upload speeds.
The WZR-HP-G450H router is definitely a keeper for me. I don't make use of the 450Mbps link capability, but at 150Mbps (which most client devices support anyway) it performs far better than any other router I have tried.
