BULLETS (Jon "Big Slick" Elder Book 1) Kindle Edition
Professional poker player Jon "Big Slick" Elder was minding his own business in a diner when an Arizona sheriff walked in and killed the man sitting next to him, a Mexican day laborer accused of murder. The law officer then arrested Slick simply because the sheriff didn't like the color of Slick's skin.
Slick knew that the stranger who had been sitting next to him at the diner was no murderer because, in addition to cards, Slick also kills people for money. The poor man didn't have the look, but Slick does, and with the help of a Latina assistant district attorney, a Navajo state trooper and a homegrown federal agent, Slick sets out to prove the dead man's innocence. What he discovers, as he digs deeper, is a deadly mystery that threatens not only him, but his newfound friends as well. But Slick hates to have anyone… ANYONE… toss him his shoes and tell him to get out of town.
"This is an exciting, intriguing, and thrilling book with twists and turns that are unexpected but all too believable. Dear author: please write another one like this." - Book Angel
"Tense, thrilling and with a lot of twists, this is an edge-of-your-seat-read with some great action scenes. An excellent debut novel by Elijah Drive." Croydon Citizen

About the author

Elijah Drive, author of the well-reviewed Big Slick series, was born in the Midwest with a large chip on his shoulder, one that he still carries with pride to this very day. Currently based on the east coast, among his many interests are literature, politics and martial arts.
He doesn’t believe in murder for money, but he does believe in karma and kicking ass, big time.

He wakes up in jail, and before you can say Rambo or Billy Jack or Reacher, that racist Sheriff and his men realize they have screwed with the wrong guy. Slick - a champion of those who have been screwed over in this world - decides to bring down the Sheriff, find out if Pedro is innocent or guilty of the crime he is charged with, and basically clean up the whole corrupt county.
Exciting, well written, and with a surprisingly emotional romantic subplot, BULLETS delivers the goods. Great fight scenes, shoot outs, car chases... and a clever plot that just keeps peeling back layer after layer of small town corruption. I especially liked the plotting - there was a great clue planted in a scene that payed off big time later in the story. So many stories these days have plotting that doesn’t stand up to a second reading, but when something is revealed in the story it has always been set up earlier and is completely logical.
From the opening scene, this is a fun page turner that had me up past my bedtime reading to find out what happened next. I hope this is the first in a series about Slick, because he’s an interesting and believable character... who kicks ass.
I also appreciated that the author gave us a terrific read without explicitly exploiting the obvious heat between the 2 main characters. An excellent action book without the cookie board ending...like real life can be. I have already bought Big Slick Elders next volume 2 and can't wait to get started.
He also states a lot about Very relevant social issues and does so in a non offensive way.
I just Loved this book
"Slick" is a hired killer. He ends up in a racist town after "taking care" of a problem. The Sheriff, Ted Rawlings, and his mininons, Bower and Collins are racists through and through. Slick winds up in jail (after a good old-fashion beating by the deputies). This came after an innocent immigrant (Pedro) is beaten first, which Slick witnesses. Slick's buddies rescued him just in time, and Slick decides to stick around to get justice for Pedro (who later dies). Of course, none of the racists cops like this, and they do everything in their power to run him off. Along the way, Slick joins forces with the beautiful Assistant District Attorney, Camilla Leon, to clear Pedro's name, who had been arrested for murder.
All the characters were well-developed, and I felt that they were real people. That's how good the writing was. Truthfully, I even liked the racist characters in the book, especially Orville and his gang. They were a hoot!
There were a lot of racist words being spewed in the book, and a lot of cursing, but I can understand why; it made the book more believable.
There were some sad parts, suspensful parts, and a lot of funny parts. I was truly sadden by the death of one of the characters in the book who played a key role in helping Slick.
Doris (a minor character), shook herself out of her funk, and took care of business near the end of the book. I'm not giving away what happened, and I LOVED what she did.
This was the first book I read from the author, and I can't wait to read another "Slick" story.

Terrific, well-rounded central characters. Snappy dialogue, and a skilfully wrought small-town-in-a-big-desert setting. And fast-paced plot with a twist I didn't see coming.
I did find some of the secondary characters a bit one-dimensional, contradicting the protagonist's contention that "nobody's a saint, but nobody is Satan, either." The story lost half a star for that reason, and another half for some editing issues I couldn't overlook.
Those quibbles aside, I will absolutely be looking to read more books by Elijah Drive. I got this one for free, but I'll cheerfully buy the next in the series.
Recommended for fans of Lee Child, Harlan Coben, and Nick Petrie.
