4.0 out of 5 stars Close to perfect
By Nickdeck on December 28, 2017
I got this to replace a Keurig machine that I've been using for about five years. Unlike some reviewers, I've had no issues with the Keurig. It was overly large, though, and I wanted to free up some counter space. Also, just wanted a new coffee maker.

The Bunn is, so far, an excellent machine. The coffee comes out about 20F degrees hotter, which I like. It makes about the same amount of noise (very little), if that matters to you. Build quality seems solid.

The quibbles: I always used distilled water in the Keurig, which might account for its longevity. No vinegar cleanings were ever necessary, because no minerals built up in it. The Bunn doesn't like distilled water because its sensor probes use the minerals in the water to confirm that water is present. No minerals = no water = no worky. That's silly, but OK, I'll buy some vinegar and live with it.

Having no On/Off switch is also silly. I'm single and drink two cups a day, every morning. I see no reason to heat the water in the tank 24/7, even if it doesn't cost much. If there were several people drinking coffee several times a day, maybe. I put a switch on the outlet it plugs into and will turn it on and off myself, like any other appliance. Takes about five minutes to get hot enough to brew, not a big deal to me.

I only use the K-cup function. I did try the brew basket drawer, which you put your own ground coffee in, but found it more messy than I wanted to deal with. Yes, K-cups cost more but they're the perfect solution for the lazy man. Me.

There is a slight problem, though. After brewing a K-cup, there is left over water pooled on the lid of the insert, which invariably ends up on the counter when you put in a new K-cup. This is not a malfunction, it's mentioned in the manual. It's not a lot (see picture), but it's enough to be mildly annoying. Just keep a rag or paper towel handy, I guess.

Overall, I'm happy with the machine. The quibbles, I figure, add up to taking off one star.

Update: After a couple of months, I'm still happy with the machine but I've learned something. If you're having trouble with leakage while brewing, it may very well be the K-Cups themselves. I have simple coffee tastes and found that I liked Wal Mart's (Great Value) Donut Shop blend. I'd been using it in my old Keurig machine, no problem, but about half the time with the Bunn machine there would be major leakage and mess. Switched to the Keurig brand Donut Shop blend and the problem went away. My theory is that the Bunn might use more pressure or something, putting more stress on the K-Cup and basically blowing it up. Just say no to Wal Mart K-Cups.

Also, if you ever need to take things apart to clean that area where the coffe comes out, pay special attention to the directions about reassembly. If that gasket isn't just right, you'll know very quickly, water all over the place. Bunn might want to re-engineer that area to be dummy-proof (me).

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST single-serve coffee maker. Period.

BUNN My Cafe

For years I was hooked on the local Tim’s drive thru for my daily grind. But doing that every day is very expensive, so to get that same taste at home, I use a BUNN 10-cup pourover brewer. It’s the only coffee maker that gives the the same boldness and consistency as in the Drive Thru. And since BUNN coffee makers are timeless, I’ve been using it for 20 years and won’t trade it for anything. But brewing a whole pot every day also gets expensive, as I end up throwing away tons of coffee. I needed a single serve option… And I wish I knew about the BUNN My Cafe sooner!

First I tried the Tassimo with the Tim Hortons brand cartridges, but I could only get a tiny cup of coffee, and it never tasted quite the same as the Drive Thru. I got rid of the Tassimo. Then I researched into Keurig machines, which I found also fell short of of the quality I was looking for, as they don’t reach the required brew temperature and provide no flexibility and lack customizability of my brew, so I ended up choosing the BUNN My Cafe for its versatility and compact size. Compared to the other single serve machines, I found it to be much more practical since it gives the option to brew pods, tea bags, loose coffee and tea, as well as K-Cups.

The BUNN My Cafe is many machines in one. It’s amazingly flexible, with 4 separate drawers that allow you choose the way you want to prepare your hot beverage to suit your tastes. If you want a fool-proof way to make a reliable cup of Joe, you can just pop in a K-Cup and play it safe. Or you can experiment and customize your beverage like I did. It's also super-fast. It can make a cup of coffee or tea in under a minute. With its on-board kettle, the stored water is always kept hot and the machine is always ready for action, no warm-up time needed. It also dispenses instant 200 degree hot water in any amount from 4 oz to 14 oz for any use. I like that it goes into standby mode after about 6 hours to save energy, and when it detects that a drawer is removed it springs back to life, and is ready to brew within seconds.

The design of the machine is purposely boring and dated because a BUNN is built to last generations. It is slightly commercial or industrial in appearance, more suited to a diner or restaurant, but also looks great in any kitchen. Personally, I love the timelessness of the design. When it comes to coffee makers, few models win over their owners such that repeated sales of the same exact model are guaranteed in the future if needed. BUNN is one of those brands… they manufacture coffee makers that put reliability and consistent-tasting coffee ahead of avant-garde countertop aesthetics.

To make a cup of coffee with the ground coffee drawer took some experimentation in order to get the drive-thru taste I crave. I settled on the following procedure:

Tim Hortons Medium Double-Double :

- FIRST pour 2 ounces of 18% cream into the bottom of a big mug
- Pour 12oz of water into machine
- Insert an Eckobrew single serve paper filter into the “ground coffee drawer”
- Scoop 10g or 1 scoop of coffee into the basket and slide it onto the machine
- With PULSE activated, press BREW and wait until finished.
- Stir in 2 spoons of sugar (optional)

If you want a high-performance yet simple machine that won’t take up much counter space, I highly recommend this machine. It makes great coffee, and with the 2 year warranty, you can rely on the BUNN My Cafe to provide you with delicious coffee or tea for years. If mine were to go today I would buy another one. If you're thinking about getting this machine, stop thinking about it and get it today. You won't be disappointed.
