I have tested to see how well it does play movies just to check it out and it does a wonderful job (Used TotalMedia Theatre 5). Also just for fun I ripped a BR movie to MKV to see its rip times and was pretty impressed.
I've burned 5 ~24GB disc (and verified) so far with no problems. For the price this is a great drive... but note it DOES NOT come with BR Playback software... Obtain either PowerDVD or TotalMedia Theatre 5 if you plan on playing Movie BluRay Disc. As far as burning disc it does come with a basic PowerDVD burning tool which is pretty much crap, but IMGBurn (free) works great with it.
When a disc spins-up the sound isn't that loud. My bad Blu-ray burner was a Pioneer and it was much louder.
The only issue I noticed was sometimes ripping a audio cd the drive will make errors when the drive is at it's max speed. Too fix this issue I dropped the speed down to 16x. Firmware version is 1.02 I'm hoping the next firmware update will take care of this error issue.
This is a OEM so no sata cable OKGear 18" Premium SATA III Round Cable 6GB/s. There is a CD with bundled software in the box.
The Microsoft Windows Driver 6.1.7601.17514 6/21/2006 works perfectly with this Blu-ray burner. No ASUS driver available for this burner.

That's likely because there are no drivers for this actual drive. After an hour-long Google search down the rabbit hole of owners with the exact same problem, I contacted ASUS support. Needless to say, they weren't very helpful. All their support links are simply scripts leading you back to the same broken support page. Their "live support" link tells you (after a 15-minute delay) that "All Engineers Are Busy" and to send an e-mail to support.
I got the e-mail from support this morning -- and the first thing they asked was if I had downloaded the newest drivers from their site -- and sent me the link to the page where you can't choose your OS for the drivers.
Look elsewhere. Save yourself the hassle. I hope when Amazon sends the replacement unit it works right out of the box, because if it doesn't, I know ASUS will not help me.
UPDATE: Two weeks later, I received a reply from ASUS. It didn't help, but at least this response wasn't canned. I also found out that some companies manage their feedback on sites like Amazon, and that's where some of the positive reviews come from and the downranking of the negative responses ... like this one. The Verbatim 97237 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Double Layer Recordable Disc BD-R DL, 3-Disc Jewel Case works great with this drive from what I've seen. I use DVD Architect to author my home videos and it is able to play the movies in my Sony BD Player.
So far my experience with this drive has been thoroughly enjoyable, and it still runs as fast and quietly as when I first purchased it a few months ago. Dual Layer Disc it takes about 2 hours to write data to the disc, 25GB BD-R Takes around 45 minutes to an hour to write to, and DVDs take around 20-30 minutes to write to.
Update: Figured I'd add an update to say that the drive is working great still and running just as fast as it did when I first purchased it.
UPDATE: I was able to get the unit working again by restoring my pc to a point before the drive issue occurred. I have had no problems with the product since but I never did receive a reply from Asus Customer Support. So, while I have upgraded the item rating to 3 stars I don't think I could ever suggest buying any Asus product because their Customer Support is non-existant.
