Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1—Lap book editions (8.5" × 11") of two of this creative team's classic titles. The simple, repetitive texts encourage toddler interaction, and the bold iconic images are perfect for one-on-one and small group sharing. The first title features 10 North American animals, while the second spotlights 10 endangered or threatened species. Carle's gorgeous painted and cut-paper collages are enormously appealing and engaging. --This text refers to the Board book edition.

From Booklist

Forty years ago, Martin and a newcomer named Eric Carle launched a cottage industry with their now-beloved classic, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1967). After narrowing the original book's broad purview in two sequels, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (1991), about zoo animals, and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? (2003), about endangered animals, this third sequel continues the thematic approach with an all-American assemblage and attention paid to the continent's many regions (a mountain goat, a rattlesnake, and a blue heron are among the creatures depicted). Martin's rhythmic text cleaves to the familiar pattern and leads readers from one double-page animal portrait to another, all crisply set against white backgrounds. Adults may appreciate the educational prospects of the North American angle, but the appeal here for the youngest children—as with the book's predecessors—will be in examining the complex, collaged textures within Carle's simple forms and in gleefully anticipating the appearance of each critter in the sequence. Format: Hardcover
This is a wonderful book for toddlers and older children. It has charming Eric Carle illustrations and covers a variety of North American animals such as skunks, deer, and prairie dogs. The amount of text is perfect to engage the interest of young children, while the North American animals capture the attention of older children. Highly recommended.

"Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?" asks the title character and, more importantly, the young reader/listener what they see as they turn through the pages of this wonderful book. Like "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?," this book is filled with brilliant, big and colorful pictures from Eric Carle. Bill Martin, Jr. focuses this story on North American animals, making it a bit more interesting for the kids and their parents here in the good ol' U.S. of A. I've actually seen a few of these animals in the wild thanks to the National Park system and a few trips around my home.

The text is familiar territory for parents and kids who've read other books by Martin, Jr. This wonderful rythmic writing makes it easy for kids to read and, even better, more fun to listen to. I highly recommend this book. It's fun for all ages.

My baby absolutely lights up with these pictures and the cadence of the story. I probably in retrospect would have bought the board book because she wants to eat the pages. (7 month old). Other than that she loves the book and the pictures.

This and Pout Pout are my toddlers favourite books. They are a joy to read and my daughter smiles every time I read the What do you see and What do you Hear books by Martin and Carle. I will buy every book in this series.

The pattern of the story is the same as Brown Bear, Brown Bear. But, different enough that it creates a new interest. Instead of each new animal "seeing " the next animal, they each transition to the next in a physical action of their own.

Little ones love this book! My niece and nephew listened attentively to this book when they were 3 months old, and older. They never took their eyes off the pages. Older little ones love it, too. The baby animals are cuties, and the pictures are so bright and fun. It's a wonderful 4th book in the Brown Bear Trilogy!

My 2 year old is in love with this book series and opens them up herself and pretends to read as she has memorized some portions. She now has all 4. Her favorite is polar bear and brown bear but this ones cute too.

My daughter has the Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? book and when I saw this one, I had to have it! My daughter will be 2yrs old in December and I thought this would make a nice addition to her Eric Carle book collection.
The book is colorful, easy to hold, and has that unmistakeable charm that all of Eric Carle's books carry. The pictures, as well as the characters, are all far more advanced than in the original Brown Bear book. The book is dedicated to the wild life of North America and has a forward encouraging everyone to do there part in the conservation efforts Eric Carle supports.
Long story short- it's worth it!
I would recommend this to a person with small children and children learning how to read as well as reading at advanced levels.
