Layla's character reminds me a lot of my own sister when she was little -- quirky, mischievous, and a bit stubborn. She even keeps a "list of things to tell the new baby", which includes things like "Dad makes the best pancakes" and "Mema gives us chewing gum".
There is one thing about this book that confused me, though, and that is the fact that A New Baby for Christmas is actually a prequel to the first book. Obviously, that's not a problem in and of itself, but I would have liked to have known that it was a prequel before I read the book. Since I didn't know it was a prequel, I was left wondering why Layla was six instead of seven, and why baby Hannah wasn't born yet. A brief note in the book, or even in the description, would have fixed this for me. Having said that, this is the only problem I have with the book.
In short, I think this book would make a delightful read for young children, especially at Christmastime, even if they haven't read the first book yet.

Every kid in the family needs to learn how to interact with siblings. Specially when a new baby is about to arrive, there's a lot for the kids to get excited about. This story tells us how Layla prepares for the arrival of her baby sister. The illustrations are amazing as usual. Bron Whitley's books are both educative and fun! The Layla series also introduces Australia to international readers and what I like best about the series is that there are plenty of interesting and fun facts in the books outside the central plot.
Go ahead and gift your kids this book for Christmas! It'll be a rewarding experience for the little ones!
In addition a cultural lessons for children in the northern hemisphere where we think of Christmas being in the middles of winter, a great opportunity for a science lesson. Taking grandma to see an Animal Park gives a great opportunity to discover animals from Austrailia.
