- Ted Jones
Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a young professional getaway driver in Atlanta. He handles the getaways for heists organized and planned by a man named Doc (Kevin Spacey). Baby met Doc after he unwittingly stole one of Doc's cars. Impressed by Baby's skills, Doc is letting Baby work off his debt by doing the getaway driving for the heists Doc organizes, giving the kid a cut of the take (less the installments on his debt, of course). Doc prefers using a different team of criminals for each job. When we first see Baby, the team consists of Buddy (Jon Hamm), his girlfriend Darling (Eiza Gonzalez), and a guy named Griff (Jon Bernthal). Baby is always wearing sunglasses and earbuds plugged into an ipod playing music, which annoys Griff as Baby seems to be in his own little world. Doc explains that it's Baby's way of dealing with his tinnitus that he has the result of a childhood accident. He needs the music to drown out the constant background hum he experiences so that he can focus on the job. Later, when pressed by Bats (Jamie Foxx), a visibly edgy member of another heist team Doc puts together who accuses Baby of not paying attention during the briefing, Baby proceeds to rattle off Doc's plan verbatim, not missing a single detail.
Highly, highly recommended for anyone who likes a good heist drama that stands out, a great cast, spectacular car chases and a killer song soundtrack.
What I liked:
•Great performance, they missed out on having Ansel Elgort as young Han Solo, and Kevin Spacey was also great despite his character being a secondary character
•Great behind the camera talent, writer and director Edgar Wright has serious talent
•Amazing balance of great action scenes, lovely romance, and overall a compelling story which is key for action films like this
•The soundtrack was perfection, along with how it went perfect with every scene
•Perfect for people who love action, and perfect for people who love romance, the perfect date night
I'm in love with this film. Seriously, seriously in love. It fit my aesthetic perfectly and I would probably watch it again right now if I could. Ansel Elgort was charismatic in the role of Baby, and his love interest played by Lily James was very good in here too, and them two together were perfect. The chemistry was there. Also everyone else were good too. Besides it's great performance, Edgar Wright delivers on the writing front and direction as well. The action scenes were amazing, and had a soundtrack that went with everything that went on screen, which made the outcome beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, the cinematography was top notch. Please see this movie, it really is meant to be seen in theaters. If you regret seeing it after... well I'm sorry that you felt that way but I'm in love.
