...The full-color cartoonish illustrations help to make the concepts more concrete, such as showing how a bird's curved wing helps it fly. These work best as a gift to a new parent who works in the science field.

Not only is it educational, but it's not boring. It is well written with lots of colorful pages and compares quarks with building blocks which is perfect.
I've read another Ruth Spiri book (Aerospace Engineering) and was not impressed, but this book makes me want to buy more from her.
The book itself is high quality, sturdy, and bright. My children can abuse this book and it will last.
After we bought this for us, I bought another copy as a gift for my friend's kids. My friend is a physicist, and loved this book so much he took it with him the next time he went to a conference to show all of his colleagues.
We noticed that the quarks looked to be different configurations in the protons and electrons, but didn't know why... So 3 adults set out on an online mission to understand more about nature's building blocks.
Oh yeah, I should probably mention that my 20 month old child also enjoys reading this book. :-)
We've been fans of Chris Ferrie's Baby University books, but the layout and simplicity of explanation in this one wins it for me.
