Baby Signs for Mealtime (Baby Signs (Harperfestival)) Board book – May 7, 2002
Purchase options and add-ons
Babies want to express their needs, especially at mealtime. Through baby signing, they can communicate when they want more, when something is too hot, or even to let everyone know it‘s ‘all gone!‘
Baby signing is easy and natural. Infants and toddlers can learn how to say what they need, what they see, and even what they feel long before their vocal chords are developed enough to let them use actual words. Both books include the most popular signs and provide parents a place to begin ‘talking‘ with their little one from the start. In this revolutionary breakthrough in parent child communication, parents have a priceless window into their young child‘s mind and heart.

One more thing... baby sign is not highly know about and people who see our daughter sign ask if she's deaf. When we explain, I think they see how neat it is that our daughter can do the signs. We also happened to be at Mc Donald's the other day and a deaf couple sat down and began to sign. Well, my daughter's eyes lit up and as we where leaving she toddled up to this couple. At first the couple was annoyed, I guess thinking she was staring ( she's only 19 months), but when I explained she knew some baby sign and did a few signs the couples eyes lite and I think it made them feel that sign was important, they didn't comment that the signs wheren't ASL, but where happy someone was teaching sign.
I hope this helps. It also helps to have the Baby Sign book as well as the board book. If I have a complaint it is that some signs are repeated in some other other board book! There is nothing better that seeing your daughter sign " dog sleeping" and I think it actually makes her feel like she has something important to say!!!
I was encouraged to try signs with my son. At 8 months, he started to mimic a couple of the signs, but didn't really understand them. Then, at about 11 months, understanding kicked in and he really started to utilize the signs. He's a little over a year now and using signs such as all done, more, rabbit, telephone, drink and sleep/tired. As soon as he is using one really well, we add a new one.
It has been SO helpful for him to be able to communicate with us! At the dinner table, he can tell us if he's done or wants more of something. If he's thirsty, he's learning to ask for a drink. And his enjoyment at using the signs is obvious. He is thrilled whenever we understand what he wants. The experience is very near what was recounted by parents in the book.
The book shows examples of signs you can use, and we've used a couple, and also made up some of our own (as suggested in the book). As the author points out, it hasn't slowed his verbal vocabulary at all, either; he's a very talkative child and knows quite a few words.
My only complaint about Baby Signs was that points tend to be repeated fairly often. It is a very quick read.
But I have found the experience of using baby signs wonderful and I don't think I would have been as excited to do it without having read Baby Signs first. I would highly recommend it; read it then have your family and daycare providers read it too!
My 11month old loved to imitate the babies in the photos helping her learn baby sign quickly!
The illustrations are simple black and white pen drawings with text to support understanding. There is also discussion of the value of introducing sign to your baby. This is a good book for the parent to learn simple (easy for baby to copy) signs and when and how to use them with your baby. It is not a book FOR babies or to teach babies directly. It is not all-comprehensive, but does give you a basis of the most common words and ideas you communicate about in the baby world.
If you seeking a product to teach your baby American sign language (ASL), will use sign language long term or if you wish to communicate with a friend who uses ASL please skip this product and choose something like the "Signing Time" DVDs.
