Stella vs Rubens Barn dolls
on December 8, 2012
I purchased this doll for my 14 month old niece, for Christmas. Although it is soft and cute, it's too big for small hands to enjoy carrying around, in my opinion. Toddlers love small babies, for their small hands, I've observed. And, although I appreciate the sweet simplicity of the design, I found Stella's face to be a little lacking in character. The eyes are kind of plain (brown/black dots). The head is stiff compared to the rest of the body. And, the hair on the Peach baby is just a few strands of floppy fabric.
At the same time I purchased this doll, I also ordered a Rubens Barn doll, from Magic Cabin, for my 4 year-old daughter. It was the Linne doll, which turned out to be too small for her doll cradle and high chair. But, it was SO soft, sweet, and full of character, I am giving it to my toddler niece, instead of the Stella doll. It's the same price as Stella, but smaller for her small hands, and just beautiful! I sent Stella back, and also ordered a Rubens Barn Kid doll for my daughter, which has the same sweet softness and character as their Linne doll, but is a little bigger (yet, still smaller than Stella). Stella's design seems to be geared towards toddlers, but is just too big, in my opinion.
I admit, I may have actually loved the Stella doll, if not for ordering a Rubens Barn doll at the same time. The Rubens Barn dolls stole my heart, and although I don't usually spend a lot of money on dolls for my daughter, these handmade cuties were well worth the splurge. They have such soft, cuddly bodies and heads, beautiful, sparkly eyes, rosy cheeks, fuzzy hair (kind of reminds me of the hair on those troll dolls, from my generation), and each one is a little different, just beaming with individual character! You could easily find one that matches your child's skin tone, eye, and hair colors.
So, if you're looking for a sweet, SOFT baby doll for your toddler, be aware, Stella is kind of big. And, if you're looking for softness and character, Stella is cute...but the Rubens Barn dolls are softer, and much cuter!
