Baby’s First Signs and More Baby’s First Signs are durable board books, lavishly colored in bright reds, blues, greens, and yellows sure to please your child’s eye. Each page features an illustration of a toddler signing a word as well as demonstrating what the sign is about. For example, on the “baby” page, the toddler makes the sign for “baby” by mimicking the cradling of a child in his arms while also smiling at his baby sister sitting beside him. The illustrations include both a diagram box that depicts exactly how to perform the sign and the English word in the top left corner, so that your child will learn English and sign language simultaneously. The books cover fundamental expressions such as “sleep,” “cold,” “eat,” and “hurt” as well as “rain,” “mommy,” “daddy,” and “car.”

Great 1st Signing Book

I had bought these books for my oldest son when he was an infant, three years ago. I have found these books to be invaulable, not only for teaching signing but also first words and using our imaginations. We have named the child in the book and make up stories about what is happening on in each page, silmilar to what you have to do with "Goodnight Gorilla." The pictures aren't elaborate but there is just enough detail to capture the child's attention and for the parent to learn the sign and teach the child. We have all 4 of these books and have already started reading them to our 8 month old, actually my oldest loves reading them to his baby brother.

Kiddo found this at the library and loved it so much I ordered our own copy. The bright colors and simple illustrations are so engaging, and our little friend in the flower hat is a charming teacher. I took sign language classes in college so this was really fun to return to. Kiddo can make most of the signs (change is a bit complicated) and regularly uses them, even though she now knows the words also. "Baby Signs, Baby Signs!" is a familiar call around this house.

The "Baby Signs" books are great to go through with a baby because the pictures are very inviting for the baby. I hoped these books would have that same inviting quality but be in ASL. Initially, my baby didn't like them as much as the "BabySigns" books, now at 15 months she seems to enjoy looking at the pictures in these books every bit as much as looking at the babies in the "Baby Signs" books.
This books gives an excellent illustration of the ASL sign with each picture along with a drawing corresponding to the word.

My 14-month old daughter Sarah loves this book, and its companion "More Baby's First Signs". She reads them to herself, making the signs as she sees the picture on each page. She knows most of the signs in the books, and I think she really enjoys the chance to use all those signs as she reads.
I love the books too. The cute illustrations are very clear, showing exactly how to make the signs. Signing with Sarah has really paid off, even though she hears and speaks perfectly well for her age (which is to say, she hears everything and says monosyllables). At least half of what she says I understand only because she signs with it.
I highly recommend these books for anyone who's using sign with their babies or toddlers. (And if you're not -- yet -- check out the "Sign with Your Baby" kit by Joseph Garcia.)
