In my relatively recent attempt to create a large CD Classical library (and 'rip' them onto iTunes - to create my own playlists) I bought Masaaki Suzuki's recording of Bach's 2- & 3-part Inventions (the latter officially titled "Sinfonias"), from a store here in Sydney.
I was disappointed with Masaaki's recording except for a few tracks: (2-part Inventions 4, 8, 12 & 14, and Sinfonias 7 & 11). This was probably because I grew up listening to my Father play most of the 2-part Inventions on our old Becker overdamper piano, from "Imperial Edition" sheet music (published by Allan & Co. Melbourne)
My Father used no rubarto to my recollection and very little ornamentation (as marked in that edition).
I chose Leonhardt on the Amazon catalogue after I found out he was an earlier generation performer (these recordings are all from November 1974).
I prefer Leonhardt's interpretation of the 2-part Inventions to Suzuki's, except for those mentioned above. There are about 5 of the 2-part Inventions I just don't like as compositions regardless of performer (though I like them all as played by Tatiana Nikolayeva on the piano - another Amazon purchase of mine).
As for the 3-part Sinfonias, I couldn't decide between Leonhardt & Suzuki on numbers 7 & 11 (Emin. & Gmin.), but with Leonhardt, I also liked 4, 10, 12, 13 & 15.
I still felt there was at least a little too much rubarto & ornamentation on all tracks (my personal taste, I forgot to look if there was a Used CD of Ralph Kirkpatrick playing these pieces - my favourite performer of Bach on the harpsichord).
Nonetheless, I'm glad I bought Leonhardt's recordings of these pieces. I could only find a "Used" copy (CD), but the "Very Good" rating of the condition was an understatement - it looked new to me. Very happy with the purchase.

My opinion is subjective.....However, my introduction to these pieces aside from the notation was Martin Gallings interpretation of them- that's how I hear these pieces- and while Leonhardt may be gifted, No. 4 in dmin. just sounds awkward, like someone running with two left steps. If you can find Galling's harpsichord version grab it up and get me one too.

This Harnoncourt performance of the Inventions and Sinfonias is typical Harnoncourt: appropriate tempos, exquisite technique, vigorous performance. The recording is acoustically fine: it doesn't sound as if the microphones are in the harpsichord case, as some do.
My only problem was that the first disc came broken and getting a replacement cost me an extra fee for shipping.

This is a very beautiful and balanced rendition of Bach's pedagogicial keyboard works, the 2 and 3 part inventions (sinfonias). (Make no mistake -- these are masterpieces. For Bach, "exercises" and "lessons" were a pretext for create works of high art). Leonhardt's harpsichord playing manages to be at once controlled and emotional. His playing of the E-flat major, F-Minor, and G-minor sinfonias are particularly beautiful and heartfelt. At a budget price, this is a sure winner.
