This first-rate set of Brandenburg Concertos (with its companion containing Concertos 1, 2, and 3) offers stylish, mostly modern-instrument performances that remain faithful to the spirit of Bach's scores--recorders are used in No. 4, harpsichord in No. 5, and viols in No. 6--while exploiting the brilliant timbre of 20th century strings. In 1980, Sir Neville Marriner was one of the gods of Baroque and classical period music, and this disc shows why. --David Vernier

There is nothing to indicate that this is in fact a re-issue of the original. You think from what Amazon tell you that you are buying a 2010 recording ... however this is the 1980 CD (even the cover hasnt changed). Its a superb recording, but I do think they need to be honest and let potential buyers know it is a very early CD.

I had the record sent as a gift to my daughter who had never heard any of the Brandenburg Concerti--and considered Bach "square." I received an ecstatic long e-mail after she heard this performance. "I'm in love!" she wrote. "I absolutely love this record. I listen to it over and over. It sounds like bells and birds!I didn't understand that Bach's music was like this."

This CD is one of the best recordings I have heard of the Brandenburg Concertos, and I have heard many. Masterful! Sir Neville Marriner has one of the most distinguished careers in classical music, and my experience is that his CD's are almost always an excellent choice.
Also, Brandenburg concerto #3 on the companion CD is just astonishing.

During the holiday season one year, while everyone was away and I was getting ready to move away from my old college town, I discovered one of my roomates classical recordings and played it louder than any heavy metal enthusiast in mid-winter.

This is my favorite classical recording and the greatest of these is Concerto No. 3 in G, tracks 8-10, especially 8 and 10. The allegro sends my spirit above the clouds.

Listen to this and it will affect your view of music and the world.

Bach had the greatest gift - simply sublime!

I looked this set over for many years and couldn't come to a conclusion whether to buy it or not. I had suspicions about a virtuoso player like Henryk Szeryng recording with expert soloists in the period style. The performances are very good and correct though in this and the companion CD of numbers 1-3. My only complaint is the audio, which lakes a degree of clarity. Also. the conducting could be a bit more precise.

If you love classical music this is a must have. If you don't love classical music, listen to this and you will. The job Neville Mariner does with this and everything else I have heard is of the best quality.

This is a particularly melodic version of the Concertos...musical perfection to be enjoyed over an over again.
I had an LP of this same combination in the late 1970's fell in love with their arrangement and tone at that time.
